Your Idabel Expanded Learning Staff is always willing and ready to improve our program to make it more fun and enriching for our students. To that end, we have several professional development days built into our calendar in order to review data and make necessary changes to meet the students' needs.

Today was the first parent meeting for the 2022-2023 Idabel Expanded Learning program. Many parents and students came to learn about the program and how it can benefit their student. We're looking forward to the enrichments and interventions we'll be providing this year!

Idabel Expanded Learning is off to a running start with a visit from SouthWest Dairy Farm! Students got to see a Jersey cow named Honey up close and personal today at the Expanded Learning program. They learned about how dairy cows eat and live, and the things they provide for us by way of their milk.

The SouthWest Dairy Museum is in Sulphur Springs, Texas.
The milk that cows like Honey provide is used for drinking, but also to make butter, cheese, yogurt and ice cream!
Our SouthWest Dairy instructor, Aaron Sanders, has visited Central several times.

Idabel Central's Expanded Learning is always willing to learn and adapt to student needs. To that end, after seeing the schedule play out over a few weeks, we are proud to add House Bellator to our house system! House Bellator (Warrior in Latin) will be headed up by Ms. Cherry and Mrs. Crowell.

The theme for Expanded Learning this month is Ag in the Classroom. As I toured the different houses today, I saw students learning about dairy cattle, types of pumpkins, comparing seeds, and different agricultural topics related to Oklahoma.

Students from Guerrero House play Farmer May I?, a game idea from the Oklahoma Ag in the Classroom program. Students took turns being the farmer and the others had a great time trying to be the first to make it there.

After School Student tutors are doing a great job with our 2nd and 3rd grade students. They are proving to be a big help to their peers and the Expanded Learning program. We hope to add student tutors as they are available to further support reading and math intervention at Central.

Iqhawe house learned about the water cycle with a Make It Rain STEM activity in Expanded Learning today. Students used shaving cream and food coloring to learn about the different types of clouds and how they make rain.

Today was the first day the ICE Warriors Archery team met for safety and rules in archery. Mrs. Hastings and Mr. Jackson are the ICE archery coaches and have attended all the required training to coach archery for our school. We look forward to seeing this team aiming for their goals!

We had our STEM parent night at Idabel Public Library this evening! We had a full house as parents, teachers, administrators and students came out to support our Idabel Expanded Learning program and learn about the projects students have worked on this month. Parents got to explore static electricity, the water cycle, aerodynamics and other topics with their students. The library staff did a fun lesson on slime and had take home kits for each student present. One family won a TV in the drawing. We look forward to many more engaging activities like this in the future!

Today, I got to visit the Archery Team as they prepared for competition. The team is made up of several returning archers in fifth grade and many new fourth graders. It was fun to see them learning the rules and procedures for safe archery. I even got to shoot a few arrows, and hit the target twice!

It's #craftweek here at Idabel Expanded Learning, and all the houses are busy making crafts. Here, Tvshka House students work on art and literacy as they complete a sequencing activity about the book There was an Old Woman Who Swallowed Some Leaves. What a fun way to get practice in a vital reading comprehension skill!

Warrior House students work to make an American flag for the Broadway Kids Veterans Day program on Friday. Each student is cutting out their own handprint in red, white, and blue to create a nice display to accompany the choir as they honor our local veterans.

Members of Iqhawe House work together with Mrs. Jackson to create pour art. First, they chose colors of paint to mix in a cup. Then they flip the cup upside down onto the canvas to create the pour. Finally, they tip the canvas back and forth to spread the paint all over the canvas. A fun and beautiful project for #craftweek.

Students in Iqhawe House used yarn and feathers to create dream catchers with Ms. Bates and Ms. Cherry. The dream catcher is one of the most enduring and widespread symbols associated with Native American culture. It's commonly believed that the iconic hoop-and-web form is meant to protect sleepers from bad dreams by “catching” them, while letting good dreams pass through, hence the name.

Idabel Central's Broadway Kids, led by Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Manuel performed at the Idabel annual lighting of the Christmas tree at the downtown amphitheatre. Broadway Kids was joined by Primary South's Sweet Sounds, Idabel Middle School's Champion Voices, High School's Poptime and Take Note, and the Idabel High School Jazz Band.

Idabel Central's Broadway Kids presented Rock the Holly on stage twice today, once for the student body during the school day and again in an encore performance for parents! The audience was treated to many great Christmas songs! Congratulations go out to Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Manuel, the directors, and the hard working students of Broadway Kids!

Expanded Learning has recently begun to serve Third Meal at our afterschool program. More substantial than a snack, Third Meal is helping students concentrate and stay focused while they participate in the programs and activities provided by Idabel Central Elementary.

We take tech savvy student help whenever we can! High school sophomore, Rebecca Cunningham, helps to set up our "Celebration TVs" in the cafeteria. We'll use the TVs to showcase birthdays, Honor Roll students, Spelling Bee and Science Fair winners, and more!

Hearts are aglow here at Central Expanded Learning as we participated in #whyweloveafterschool and #afterschoolworks. Students wrote the reasons why they love our expanded learning program. Students have access to enrichment, tutoring, archery, Broadway Kids and have a filling, healthy snack each day!

Last week was Mardi Gras, and Ms. Oney and Iqhawe house got to learn about New Orleans traditions, food, music and Mardi Gras! The students had fun completing word searches and creating their own masks. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Today, Mrs. Clements and members of the Idabel United Partners came to Idabel Central to talk about kindness and inclusion. The Unified Partners shared skits with Expanded Learning students and Mrs. Clements talked about the sports the students are involved in. Students have teams in E-Sports, Bocce, Soccer, Flag Football, Bowling, Arts and Music, Cornhole and Horseshoes. After several skits, the team went with the different houses to complete more activities about being a Champion for Change, and talk about ways they could practice kindness, acceptance and inclusion at home and at school.

Guerrero returns again to their legacy of community service by taking up donations of supplies for Idabel's Animal Shelter. Led by Karen Pond and Beatrice Royal, Guerrero House is asking for donations of pet food and supplies in order to make their project a success.

Tonight was our Spring Family Literacy Night! We had a great turnout, as parents and students participated in scavenger hunts, a photo booth, STEM and art activities and Reader's Theater. Free books were given out, and there was a drawing for prizes. One family won an ice cream maker and one lucky student won a portable boom box! Thanks to all the parents, students, and Expanded Learning staff who worked to make this night a success!

Today was Central Expanded Learning's First Annual Field Day. Students rotated through stations, from jump rope, to long jump, to hula hoops, to basketball throw. Students had a great time, ending with an exciting water relay won by House Iqhawe!

Today was the awards ceremony for yesterday's field day. Students received ribbons, and some got to have a "hoop-off" to determine the best hula hooper!
