Role of a Primary School Counselor
The school counseling program addresses students’ academic and social/emotional development. The school counselor also works collaboratively with administrators, teachers, parents and the community to help students achieve success.
Individual Counseling and Group Counseling: This service provides emotional support to a student or small group of students during times of transition, heightened stress, critical change or other situations impeding student success. School counseling focuses on helping students develop social/emotional skills to help respond to issues that they face.
Classroom Programs: I will have the pleasure of visiting all of the Primary School classes to talk with the children about mental health and how to handle strong feelings in an appropriate way. Some of the skills we work on include, discussing feelings, managing frustration and work on calming down strategies. In addition to the Mental Health curriculum, there will be one lesson on personal safety.
