Most of the buildings were built between the 8th and 12th centuries and were restored in the 19th century. The monastery became an important pilgrimage center. The complex suffered several Viking attacks, but the worst looting occurred in 1398 when most of the buildings were destroyed by the English forces.
Russborough House is a Georgian mansion, that was built in the 1740s.
Some anecdotes
Nothing can be built that is visible from the mansion.
The tapestries on the walls are Spanish, and the red dining room chairs are also Spanish.
The mansion has suffered theft of paintings, including some Goya, but they have always been recovered. Now, some of them are in the National Gallery of Ireland.
Another anecdote is that during the Irish War of Independence, British soldiers were forced to use the mansion's parquet as firewood to keep themselves warm, due to the extreme cold.
