The Illinois driver's license road exam is a test that assesses a driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely and confidently. The exam consists of two parts: a vehicle inspection and a driving portion.
Here are some things to know about the Illinois driver's license road exam:
Vehicle inspection: The driver must demonstrate that the vehicle is in working order and the driver is familiar with its parts.
Driving portion: The driver is observed driving for 10–20 minutes while the examiner evaluates their driving skills. The examiner will look for safe driving practices, such as following road signs, maintaining proper lane position, and making safe lane changes. In addition to these common practices, the driver will be required to perform a turnabout on the left as well as an uphill/downhill park.
Test route: The examiner will follow a route approved by the Secretary of State's office.
Failure: The driver will automatically fail the exam if they violate any traffic laws or engage in dangerous activities.
Availability: Check your facility for days & hours of operation, as well as if appointments are required or if walk-ins are allowed.
Best of luck and drive safe!
