The Philippines have a fair share of Filipino artists that garnered both local and international recognition. Biggest example would be Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972), the first National Artist of the country. His creativity defined the nation’s culture and heritage to this day. Pacita Abad (1946-2004) is an internationally revered artist known for her masterwork, the Alkaff Bridge in Singapore. She has participated in over 60 exhibitions across the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Agnes Arellano (1949-present) is a sculptor known for her surrealist and expressionist work in plaster, bronze and cold-cast marble. Agnes attributes her work to ‘inscapes’, that assert an internal unity among various elements in her installations and sculptures.

Juan Luna’s Spolarium, one of the most iconic paintings of the country, depicts the history of the Philippines under Spanish colonization. Fernando Amorsolo’s paintings depict the culture and livelihood of the Filipinos. Agnes Arellano’s sculptures revolve around themes like sexuality, religion, and mysticism.
Art is a form of expression of thoughts, ideas, messages, and meanings. Its greatest strength is being able to convey them in ways no other forms of expression could, using the concepts of color, shapes, symbols, shading, and much more, to try and convey a message that speaks to us to another level. Filipino artists have been using this to portray the culture and heritage of the country for years. It has been one of the common and accessible ways for the Filipino people to learn the country’s culture and history.
