Patient Reported Outcome Measurements, the HSA continues to work with the shunt registry on the development of these outcome measures. We are looking at using a World Health Organisation survey called the WHOQOL which is a survey used to measure quality of life for a population. It covers the domains of bodily states and functions, psychological functions, levels of independence, social relationships and environment.
The current state of the project is a costing to see the magnitude of what it costs, this cost is unfortunately not covered by the government funding so there may be a need for support from the HSA either financially or by supporting a fundraising campaign. If we are approached by the NSA this will be discussed by the committee.
Would you like to support the HSA? There are a number of easy ways to do so. The first is to buy some under pressure for hydro merchandise at https://underpressureforhydro.org.au/shop. Another easy way is to start a Facebook fundraiser, how you can do so is:
Login to Facebook on a desktop
On the left-hand side click on fundraisers (you may have to click see more if you have not recently run a fundraiser)
On the left-hand side click raise money
Click charity and type “the hydrocephalus support association” and select us.
Enter your goal for the fundraiser and set the currency to Australian dollars.
Click create
Share the fundraiser with your friends on Facebook.
Finally, I hope you all had a pleasant new year and I look forward to speaking to many of you during the year.

After you/your child’s surgery you will receive a Participant Information letter and an opt out form (the one you receive may look a little different from the one below). If you want you/your child’s information to be recorded in the Registry you do not have to do anything. If you wish, you can remove some or all of your information. No reason needs to be given.
Please remember to check the tick box corresponding to the information you want removed. If a form is received with only you/your child’s information but no opt out fields requested, this is considered a full opt out and no information is recorded in the Registry.
Any questions or comments? Please contact me via email at shunt.registry.com.au

JOURNEY AS TOLD BY MOTHER LOUISE
Jack’s journey began when he was 7 months old and his head circumference was jumping high above the 95th percentile. Despite this he was still doing the typical things – rolling, sitting, etc and was the happiest little man! A check ‘just in case’ on ultrasound revealed marked hydrocephalus and an appointment with a neurosurgeon planned. Before that appointment could be booked, Jack suddenly became symptomatic and we rushed him to emergency.
JOURNEY AS TOLD BY LUCAS
My hydrocephalus journey started 14 years ago soon after I was born at 25 weeks gestation in Perth WA. I ended up with post meningitic hydrocephalus with aqueductal stenosis which started a roller coaster ride of surgeries, recoveries, revisions and hospital stays for observation. I don’t remember those earlier years of surgeries but my parents tell me about them and show me photos. I had my first VP shunt put in at a few weeks old. I then had a new programmable shunt valve put in a few years later, but the original one was left in there.
Tips and tricks for your school-age #hydrowarrior

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” (Dr Seuss; Oh, the places you’ll go!)
And so, back to school. Up and down this country of ours, many parents and carers of our youngest (and mightiest) hydro warriors are breathing a sigh of relief tinged with worry. How’s it going to go this year? What will it be like for them in a new class, a new grade, with a new teacher? How can I help my child learn and become more independent?
The mental health checklist we all need

So, you’ve got hydrocephalus. Perhaps you’ve had it since birth, or maybe you’ve just been told you’ve got it. Momentous, change your life forever, kind of thing. How did you feel when you found out the management of hydrocephalus is brain surgery? Do you remember how you felt when you found out you needed another surgery? Or when you were worried that there was something wrong with your shunt? How did you feel when you were recovering from your latest surgery to manage your hydrocephalus? How did you pick yourself up and live your best life?

The Hydrocephalus Support Association is run by a committee, who are elected into their positions each year at the Annual General Meeting. Everyone who works in the Hydrocephalus Support Association is a volunteer. Most of the committee members work full or part time in paid employment, and they fit in their commitments to the HSA in addition to work and family life.
The Hydrocephalus Support Association wishes to express our gratitude to our sponsors for their very generous ongoing support.
