IDEAS TO PROMOTE LEARNING

PRESCHOOL AGES 3-5

It’s important to establish routines and schedules that you are able to follow daily.

Activities

  • Read every day to your child
  • Retell stories from a book or personal event
  • Borrow books/activity bags from the library
  • Bake/cook with your child
  • Sing
  • Make up real and silly rhyming words
  • Puzzles
  • Play Dough
  • Paper (draw a picture about a book you read and write what your child tells you about the picture)
        • crayons/markers/pencils
        • scissors
        • glue
        • stickers
        • watercolors
  • Chalk
  • Bubbles
  • Water play
  • Wikki Stix and/or pipe cleaners
  • Magnetic Letters and Numbers and shapes
  • Shaving cream on a tray (use like finger paint and write letters/numbers/shapes)
  • What’s Missing (display 5 items on a tray, identity the items, child hides eyes, remove 1 item, child guesses what’s missing)
  • Use a calendar to count, identify numbers, letters and special days during the month
  • Participating in household chores (sorting socks, setting the table, folding towels)
  • Look for signs of the season when taking a walk/hike
  • Create something from nature
  • Pretend play
  • Practice saying your full name and writing your name
  • Practice counting to 20 or more
  • Help your child learn their address
  • Clap, jump or stomp syllables in words/names


Games to Play Together (may need to modify according to skill level) The following games will help reinforce turn taking, sharing, and readiness skills such as numbers, letters, shapes, and colors.

  • Bingo with preschool concepts
  • Matching Games (make your own)
  • Hungry Hippos
  • Let’s Go Fishing
  • Play “I Spy” (ex: finding all the letters in your name)
  • Play Hide and Seek with items
  • Ring Around the Rosie
  • Go Fish or other card games
  • 20 Questions
  • Candyland
  • Count and sort items (toys, silverware, stuffed animals, etc.)
  • Trouble
