7th graders also experience a collaborative mythology unit alongside students in sea girt school. By exploring myths, they will analyze characterization, conflicts, and resolutions, uncovering timeless narratives that have fascinated people for centuries. This mythology experience will culminate in group "performances," where students will showcase their learning by working with "Purple" Norris, a well-known educator and hip-hop historian. Under her guidance, students will learn the art of writing lyrics, blending ancient tales with modern creativity. This dynamic and multifaceted unit promises to be an unforgettable journey into the realms of mythology, fostering both analytical and creative skills.
Our middle school writing curriculum focuses on nurturing both formal and creative writing skills, guiding students through the entire writing process—from brainstorming and drafting to revising and publishing. Students learn how to develop their "formal" writing voice by crafting evidence-based responses/essays, using research and critical thinking to support their ideas. Simultaneously, they explore creative storytelling techniques in narrative writing, where imagination and personal expression take center stage.
Throughout the school year, students publish their work in a digital "Paw Print" portfolio using Google Sites, providing a tangible showcase of their progress and achievements. This portfolio not only reflects their growth as writers but also emphasizes their ability to communicate effectively across different genres. It proves to be an engaging experience as students enjoy designing these portfolios and creating ones that reflect their own unique personalities and experiences. This portfolio project is important in the modern world of technology because it equips our young learners with essential digital literacy skills, fosters ownership of their work, and prepares them for a future where online platforms are key for communication and showcasing accomplishments.
Ultimately, the curriculum prioritizes building essential communication skills, preparing students to become lifelong learners and confident writers who can express themselves clearly, think critically, and engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
We use Google Classroom to post daily updates in the "stream" and assignments in "classwork." Students join using the class code and access this playform on a daily basis. If a student is absent, they can easily check our virtual Classroom for everything they need!
Genesis is where students can check their posted grades. They are encouraged to be on the look out for "comments" that can provide helpful feedback on specific assignments in addition to make-up due dates.
7th graders meet virtually with students at Sea Girt School during the collaborative mythology unit.
Students enjoy the annual Asbury Park Trip to the Pinball Museum within The Outsiders unit.
