Dosbarth Caradog absolutely loved reading The Final Year, Matt Goodfellow’s powerful verse novel that follows the main character, Nate through the highs and lows of his final year of primary school.
The class were especially drawn to the way the book explores real-life challenges such as friendship changes, school pressures and big emotions, all told through short, expressive poems that make Nate’s voice feel incredibly real.
They found it gripping and it sparked brilliant discussions about resilience, empathy and the importance of the people who support us.
Having enjoyed it so much, they are now very keen to dive into The First Year next and continue following Nate’s journey.
During our group reading sessions, the children don’t just read the text — they also answer questions based on the higher-order reading skills we have been introducing. These include skills such as retrieval, inference, prediction, vocabulary and explaining ideas. This helps children deepen their understanding of the text and think more carefully about what they read.
