The WJEC Level 1 / 2 Vocational Award in Engineering offers a dynamic, hands-on introduction to the world of modern design, manufacturing, and engineering principles. Designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and practical workshop practice, this qualification equips learners with essential engineering skills—including technical drawing standards, precision machining, material testing, and CAD design.
Pupils learn how to interpret complex technical information, apply engineering mathematics to solve real-world problems, and safely manufacture high-quality engineered components working to strict industry tolerances.
The course is structured around three core units combining internal controlled practical assessments with a final external examination:
Unit 1: Manufacturing Engineering Products
(40% — Non-Exam Assessment / Controlled Assessment)
Format: A 20-hour practical workshop task set by WJEC and marked internally
What Pupils Do: Learners analyse engineering drawings to safely cut, shape, machine, assemble, and finish a functional engineering product using workshop machinery, tools, and metal / polymer materials
Focus: Engineering drawing interpretation, workshop tool precision, material properties, and quality control against tight tolerance limits.
Unit 2: Designing Engineering Products
(20% — Non-Exam Assessment / Controlled Assessment)
Format: A 10-hour design task set by WJEC and completed under controlled conditions
What Pupils Do: Learners analyze an existing engineering component or problem and produce an engineered design solution
Focus: Computer-Aided Design (CAD), engineering drawing standards (orthographic projection), material selection, and iterative engineering design.
