Lexia -
All our SPLD moderate and high risk pupils should have been assessed on lexia this week. We have a 30 day trial with this software and I would really appreciate that the following children (ill send by email) ALL have 20 minutes every day to log into lexia and go on the programme.
I feel to invest in this, I need to look at the data that is presented in the trial so your cooperation and support with the pupils to access daily, will be most helpful. Please see me if any issues with the logging in.

Please can you forward the following link to all staff, so they can express their workshop preferences – it is often best to complete this in a staff meeting or at a time many staff are together, to ensure it is not forgotten:
The OU Reading Schools Programme Conference Day Workshop Selections - Partneriaeth
This link will close on Friday 22 December at 6:30pm, so that workshops can be allocated. We will try to give everyone their first two choices – but this may not be possible, given the numbers attending! Delegates will be emailed their allocation prior to the day and I will provide each English leader with a summary sheet for their staff, as a back-up. I will also email you in December and early January to let you know who has signed up, so you can chase anyone up. Any staff subsequently unable to complete their preferences will be allocated a workshop on the morning of the conference and may not get a choice, depending on the spaces left.

Empathy Lab books
UBD launch video
Time to analyse data to identify areas/groups/cohorts to focus on
Manon Steffan Ros: her book The People Next Door makes her a great choice for this topic. She’s very eloquent about empathy, and of course now pretty famous, having just won the Carnegie medal! She’s also a Welsh speaker, in case that’s helpful. Her Empathy Walk on our website is worth a look, it’s just wonderful.
Caryl Hart: is one of the authors we’ve trained in our Empathy Masterclasses. She’s become hugely interested in the whole topic of empathy, and does great work with younger children. Her book Together we Can is all about people working together, and is featured in our bi-lingual Read for Empathy collection
Rashmi Sirdeshpande: you’ve worked with her before of course. Wanted to re-recommend her partly because of her How to Change the World book which is perfect for this topic, and partly because she’s authored our new handbook for children on empathy called We’ve Got This! She’s really expert on empathy.
Let me know the best next steps? All the best, Miranda
BOOK SUGGESTIONS
Books exploring the joy of community/ working together
Together we can – picture book for the very young, exploring all the things you can do together. Available in Welsh too.
Clean up – picture book in which an exuberant central character, Rocket, gets everyone working together to clean up the environment
How to change the world – non fiction picture book, showing how people have worked together to change things for the better. Takes a historical perspective
Books exploring perspective-taking and the nastiness and pointlessness of “othering”
Sky dancer – novel told from two different perspectives, characters with passionately held beliefs about whether or not it’s OK to kill raptors
Cyril and Pat – funny, powerful picture book. All the park creatures think it’s not right for a squirrel and a rat to be friends, but Cyril and Pat prove them wrong.
Those People Next Door – hilarious but horribly true picture book in which green aliens object to the arrival or purple aliens .
The Suitcase – great picture book about what a welcome looks like, and how it feels when being greeted with hostility
Something Else – tear jerking picture book about a little creature called Something Else, who is rejected by the community around him. But things turn out find when another strange creature appears and they become friends, turning attitudes around
The Little Island – picture book using animal metaphors, all about the pointlessness of tribalism. In the end all the creatures realise it’s much better to be working together.

Begin topic with an empathy walk – what do the pupils perceive the issues are within the community from their walk? Break down the 5 Proficiencies for Maths:-
Conceptual understanding: nitty gritty, what do they already know? What do they need to know? Important to teach where it came from and why e.g. equal sign – Robert Record – Welsh – Cynefin.
Communication using symbols: what symbols. What symbol do they need to know e.g. equal sign. What does it mean?
Strategic competence: encouraging lots of different methods and the structure of the lesson.
Logical reasoning: solving problems/making them think.
Fluency: recalling and checking.
You can use the template below to plan a series of lessons focusing on the 5 Proficiencies

This is our data analysis – how are we tackling the needs of those identified learners? To discuss in wings.
<<Procedural Data Progress Evidence Y1-Y6 2020-21 (2).docx>>
<<Reasoning Analysis - Y2-6 (2) (2).docx>>
Mathematics Summary:
In reasoning, on average 82% of children are working at expected level or above by the end of the academic year. In procedural mathematics, 72% of children are working at expected level or above.
Neither boys nor girls consistently outperform each other in procedural mathematics. In some year groups boys attain higher than girls, and in other year groups girls attain better than boys. However, the difference in attainment is narrowed by the end of year 6.
In reasoning, boys attain better than girls, although Y2 boys are significantly poorer than girls.
There remains a difference in attainment between eFSM and nFSM throughout the school, particularly in procedural mathematics. The gap is narrower in reasoning, possibly because it has been a focus area for improvement.
Ways Forward
Year 1 (current Y2 cohort) – focus on improving attainment of eFSM pupils
Year 2 (current Y3 cohort) – raise standards in maths particularly attainment of boys in reasoning and eFSM attainment in procedural mathematics.
Year 3 (current Y4 cohort) - focus on improving attainment of eFSM pupils
Year 4 (current Y5 cohort) - focus on improving attainment of eFSM pupils in procedural maths and the attainment of girls.
Year 5 (current Y6 cohort) - focus on improving attainment of eFSM pupils in procedural maths and the attainment of girls.
Year 6 - focus on improving attainment of eFSM pupils

- Sunflower drawings/colourings
https://www.artventurers.co.uk/blog/2022/02/26/sunflowers-for-ukraine-printables/
- we will plant a sunflower for every child in the school – Mrs Thomas – children to make poster for the area where the sunflowers will grow – Sun Flowers For Ukraine – poster competition. School council member for the class to choose winner.
- Wear yellow or blue
- Empathy Quest – Paperchain of Peace - As a school we want to show that peace is stronger than war.
Each child to have a link of a paper chain in blue or yellow paper to the template below– children to write their name or a message to the children of Ukraine on the link. Link the whole class together – School council will then collect, and we will create one long chain to display with our Empathy display in the main corridor. The chain will symbolise each child coming together and standing strong!
<<Ukraine Paperchain.docx>>
- Ukraine flag – collage – painting – colouring – see link below
ukraine flag outline - Bing images
- Write an empathy Poem for the children of Ukraine
- Write letter to children in Ukraine
- Ask pupils to bring a donation in on this day – suggestion £1
