This section should include practical information on how you will implement your strategy. You may wish to include the following sub-sections:
Roles and responsibilities need to be clearly defined at this point.
Here are some questions for you to consider:
What role will the headteacher and the senior leadership team play?
What is expected of the Numeracy Coordinator?
What is the role of every member of the school community in developing learners' numeracy skills?
Who is responsible for leading the monitoring and evaluation of the strategy? How will the school's leadership support the Numeracy Coordinator with this?
Defining your approach
Clearly defining the approach and expectations around numeracy in your school is important to include in your strategy.
You may wish to include the following steps as a part of your approach towards numeracy:
Having the right mindset towards numeracy.
AOLE's identifying key numeracy skills that are important to them.
AOLE's are fully familiarised with the mathematical departments principles and approaches.
Mapping out the numeracy development opportunities across the curriculum.
Collaborate on planning for progression within the identified opportunities.
Monitor and assess progress.
Review and evaluate.
Explaining and including your school's processes for planning numeracy related activities would be beneficial to include in your strategy.
Additional focus should be given here on how AoLEs/departments are supported with planning for progression in numeracy skills. You may wish to provide a link to supporting materials that you intend to use.
You should also include detail of a mapping process. It's important that you explain the purpose of this mapping process. e.g. to ensure progression opportunities are coordinated across the curriculum, or to ensure adequate opportunities are planned across the curriculum to develop numeracy.
Creating additional guidance resources for teachers could be beneficial for teachers who lack confidence in delivering numeracy related activities.
it could be a way to ensure teachers are clear on the expectations around numeracy
understand appropriate strategies and approaches
be a way of striving for consistency across the curriculum.
This could also potentially be something useful to collaborate working on with your primary cluster to ensure consistency and continuity across the continuum of learning.
Below are just some examples of what you could consider to include as supporting materials to ensure expectations around numeracy are completely clear. There is no one way that's preferable, your starting point could be to ask key members of staff what would actually help them.
Implementation process & action planning
In this section you could explain the various stages in implementing your strategy. You may wish to number your steps/stages as you work towards whole school implementation. You could consider:
initially focusing your implementation on a key faculty or faculties.
initially focusing on a key element of numeracy e.g. representing and interpreting data.
It would be useful to include a link at this point to your action plan. This plan should be a standard action plan that you use to plan the next steps of your implementation and will provide clarity to all stakeholders in reference to what's currently being developed, the time frame and the measure of the impact as part of the strategy.
The action plan is usually formed and managed by the Numeracy Coordinator, and should be monitored and supported by the school's leadership and shared with the whole school.
Interventions
Numeracy interventions are likely to play a key part in improving numeracy at your school, therefore it would be beneficial to include information on your planned interventions in your strategic plan. Here you can find a link to a support pack to help you plan suitable interventions
