At Ysgol Iolo Morganwg, we aim to create a homely, happy, safe and Welsh medium learning environment where all pupils are given equal opportunities to achieve and are inspired to reach their full potential through a range of learning experiences. Our aim is to enable all learners to develop, hone and apply key skills in order to become enthusiastic independent learners, with a passion for lifelong learning. Through the hard work, dedication and support of our learning community, we strive to ensure that our pupils grow into kind, responsible, confident, and successful individuals and “May everyone enjoy success in achieving” – this is our ambition for all.
VALUES
The four purposes of the Curriculum for Wales form the foundation of our curriculum’s vision and ambition. These purposes underpin all aspects of school life and are firmly embedded through our shared values. Our values serve as the guiding principles for everything we do – as pupils, as adults, and as a wider school community
Through our shared vision and firmly established values, which are woven into every aspect of school life, our aspiration is for all pupils to grow into:
AMBITIOUS AND CAPABLE LEARNERS
ENTERPRISING AND CREATIVE CONTRIBUTORS
ETHICAL AND INFORMED CITIZENS
HEALTHY AND CONFIDENT INDIVIDUALS
INTENTION
The intention of our curriculum at Ysgol Iolo Morganwg is to provide a broad, relevant and engaging curriculum that meets the needs of learners of all ages, abilities and talents. It combines skills, knowledge and experiences to create meaningful learning opportunities, enabling every learner to make appropriate progress according to their individual strengths and needs.
Full consideration is given to each of the six Areas of Learning and Experience and to the Statements of What Matters within these.

MANDATORY ELEMENTS
We ensure that our curriculum maps fully reflect and incorporate the mandatory elements of the Curriculum for Wales, including:
Religion, Values and Ethics
Relationship and Sexuality Education
Welsh and English
Cross Curricular Frameworks - literacy, numeracy and digital competence
We also promote statutory elements such as:
Careers and the world of work
Human rights
Diversity
CYNEFIN
When presenting our curriculum, we will make full use of the connections, expertise and rich experiences available beyond the classroom. This will help pupils to feel an integral part of wider society and to appreciate learning within local, national and international contexts. A strong sense of Welsh identity and a love of language will be at the heart of our curriculum.
OUR THEMES
We have developed our themes to ensure clear and coherent strands of learning across the school. By maintaining a balanced overview, we can see precisely what pupils have learned previously and deliberately build on those foundations. This enables each child to deepen their understanding and make meaningful connections across different themes.
No two classes explore the same theme at the same time, but each focuses on the same core concept through engaging, age-appropriate contexts. This approach reflects the principles of a spiral curriculum – revisiting key concepts repeatedly, each time at a more sophisticated level, to ensure continuous deepening of knowledge, skills and understanding. A concept-based curriculum therefore encourages creative repetition – repetition that drives progress and enriches learning, rather than merely revisiting content.
Furthermore, this approach provides a clear and consistent picture of what is being taught across the school. It ensures effective progression from year to year, creating a coherent, meaningful and ambitious learning journey for all pupils.
Adventure focus - past, present and future
Sustainability focus
At Ysgol Gymraeg Iolo Morganwg, we use assessment opportunities to support each learner in making progress along our learning continuum, ensuring they are both supported and appropriately challenged. Our assessment methods maintain a continuous focus on individual progress over time, while also considering the development of groups of learners. This approach allows for ongoing reflection, informing future provision and enabling deliberate, targeted planning.
In our commitment to self-evaluation, listening to the pupil voice, and developing as a learning organisation, we continuously evaluate and adapt our curriculum to meet the needs of all learners.
Curricular developments are shared regularly with the school’s stakeholders through the school website and other promotional channels, ensuring transparency and engagement with the wider community.
