At Ysgol Afon Wen, our commitment to nurturing the potential within every pupil is at the heart of all we do. We strive to provide engaging and meaningful learning experiences that prepare our pupils for success in their future lives. The Year 10 Work Experience Week is a vital part of this journey, offering pupils the chance to activate learning, advance curiosity, and achieve success beyond the classroom.
From Monday 29th June to Friday 3rd July 2026, Year 10 pupils will take part in a week-long work experience placement. This opportunity allows pupils to gain hands-on experience in a real-world work environment, helping them explore potential career pathways and develop essential skills that reflect our core values of being Happy, Healthy, Ready, Respectful, and Responsible.
To make this week a success, we kindly ask for your support in helping your child secure a suitable work experience placement. Here are some useful steps:
Finding a Placement:
You can begin sourcing a placement as soon as your child enters Year 10. You may arrange a placement through someone you know personally, such as a family member, friend, or colleague. Alternatively, you can contact local businesses related to your child's interests to enquire about opportunities.
Completing the Paperwork:
Paper work will be released to pupils at the beginning of Spring Term. Please complete Part A of the work experience form on behalf of your child, and provide a copy to the employer.
The employer must complete Part B, detailing the work experience role, company information, and any health and safety considerations.
Additionally, please obtain a copy of the employer’s current Employer’s Liability Insurance and submit this with Part B to your child’s form tutor.
Family Business Placements:
If your child will be working with a close family member who owns the business, please complete Part C of the form too.
Once we receive the paperwork, the placement will be reviewed and approved by RCT to confirm it is a safe and appropriate environment for your child. We will notify you once their placement has been signed off.
Should you have any questions or require assistance, please do not hesitate to contact your child's form tutor, progress lead or Mrs R. Stephens.
Next Steps for Parents and Pupils:
From September to December, begin discussions about possible work experience placements.
From December, review and complete Part A of the work experience form.
From Spring Term, (if you have not done so already) approach potential employers and provide them with the relevant paperwork.
Collect and submit all necessary paperwork by the deadline. An in date employer's liability certificate will need to be obtained by the employer and submitted to the school with the rest of the paperwork. This can all be handed to your child's form tutor.
Thank you for your support in making the Year 10 Work Experience Week a valuable and inspiring part of your child’s education at Ysgol Afon Wen. Together, we can help our pupils flourish and shine brightly in their futures.
We’re delighted to share how successful our Year 10 2025 work experience week was. Pupils represented the school with confidence and maturity, receiving glowing feedback from employers. One employer said, “I would give her a job,” while another described a pupil as, “an absolute delight,” adding that she will be returning to volunteer at their summer fair. Pupils were praised for being eager to learn and fitting in well with staff teams both externally and internally at Ysgol Afon Wen.
The experience was also eye-opening for pupils themselves. One reflected, “I learned what was done with X-rays and CT scans after they had been taken,” while another said, “I realised how much doing a small thing can help other people.” Thank you to all families who supported by securing placements and encouraged pupils throughout the process – they did themselves, and the school, proud.
