July 12 - Galit Zolkower: Information about Plans for Fall
Dear Highland View Families,
Over the weekend, MCPS released a document, “Considerations for MCPS 2020 Fall Recovery.” While this is not yet a definitive plan, it does share the system’s best thinking about the options that will provide instruction for children, while taking into consideration health and safety concerns.
It is important to know that this document is just the starting point for discussion and decisions. The Board of Education will have a robust discussion of the framework during its July 14 meeting. I encourage you to watch. It will be streamed live on the MCPS website.
MCPS welcomes your feedback. You can submit your feedback at
I also want to thank those of you who have provided input via the parent survey. The areas where you have expressed concern have been the focus of our discussions as we plan for the 2020-2021 school year. We share those concerns.
Regardless of the plan for next year, it is our intent to work to balance children’s academic and social-emotional well-being and to establish strong relationships between staff, students, and families.
Sincerely,
Galit Zolkower

June 26 - Montgomery County Public Schools: An Important Message from Superintendent Jack Smith — Addressing Allegations of Sexual Assault and Harassment
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Over the last few days, students from several MCPS high schools have reached out to the district, school principals and administrators to make us aware of allegations of sexual assault that potentially involve MCPS students.
We are deeply troubled by these allegations and we commend our students for coming forward to inform us of these alleged incidents. The safety of our students is our top priority and we are committed to maintaining an environment in which all students can learn and thrive. I want to assure you that all allegations involving our schools and/or students that come to our attention will be investigated.
If you or your child have information regarding an alleged sexual assault, you should notify the Montgomery County Police Department immediately by calling 301-279-8000. Families may also contact the Victim Assistance and Sexual Assault Program (VASAP) for support. VASAP provides information and referrals, advocacy, as well as crisis and ongoing counseling for victims of sexual assault. Additionally, we want to encourage students who may be hesitant to contact the police to take advantage of the confidential Montgomery County Hotline by calling 240-777-4357 or 301-738-2255 (EveryMind). A trained staff member or volunteer will provide supportive listening and information, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students may text the EveryMind hotline telephone number every day, available between noon and midnight.
Parents and students should report any bullying or harassment by completing MCPS Form 230-35, Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation Reporting Form. Additional resources for families can be found at:
We understand that the experiences that have been shared by our students have caused feelings of deep sadness, anger, hurt and disappointment. MCPS is committed to a fair process where all students involved will be provided an opportunity to address the allegations. We ask that you allow the district to gather information. Engaging in public shaming or bullying in response to these allegations is very harmful to all involved and can negatively impact on potential investigations.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
Sincerely,
Jack R. Smith, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools

MCPS has launched a survey designed to gather community input around key elements that will need to be included in the district's recovery plan for the fall. When completing this survey, please keep in mind that we are considering a number of scenarios, including continuing with remote learning; engaging in a hybrid model that includes some face-to-face instruction and some remote learning; and providing in-person learning with restrictions in place, such as physical distancing and improved health and safety requirements.
This survey will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. All questions on this survey are optional. Your responses are anonymous and will only be reported in summary form. Please complete the survey by 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8.
June 21 - Galit Zolkower: Sunday Message 6/21/2020
Hello Highland View Community,
This is Ms. Zolkower calling with the last Sunday message of the school year!
Some of you have inquired regarding Gifted and Talented student identification. The link included in the email version of this message will provide you with updates.
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/enriched/
Families should have received a final report card for their children. The report card will contain grades for Marking Periods 1-3, as well as a cumulative average. The Montgomery County Board of Education approved a revised grading policy for the fourth marking period of the 2019-2020 school year. Letter grades were not assigned for Marking Period 4 at the elementary level. As a result, you will see on your child’s report card that the Marking Period 4 section will not contain grades.
I am reminding you that tomorrow, June 22 and Tuesday, June 23 are the only days that families will be able to pick up student items from school. If you are able to drive to school, please do so. The schedule for each day is attached to the email version of this message. Please come only when your child's grade level is scheduled. Be sure to have with you a sign with your child's name and your child's teacher's name.

June 14 - Galit Zolkower: Staffing update
Dear Highland View Parents,
During the past week, Ms. Denise Fleet informed the staff of her decision to retire at the end of the school year.
Ms. Fleet has been at Highland View for 27 years and many of your children know her. If you were inclined to send her a message, I know she would very much like to hear from you.
I also wanted you to know that, given the uncertainty of the impact of COVID 19 on schools, Mrs. Mercedes Gill has made the decision not to return to Highland View for the coming school year. Again, I'm sure she would love to receive messages from former students and their families.
Both teachers can be reached via MCPS email through June 30:

Mercedes_B_Gill@mcpsmd.org
Thank you.
Sincerely,

These are the ONLY days when we will be distributing student materials. Since our school is undergoing HVAC replacement, we have very limited access to the building and will not be able to retrieve items after June 23.
Typically, this would be the last message of the school year. This year, however, I will be sending another message to share updates about student item pick up and updates about summer programs. I will reach out to you next weekend with that information.
As we close the school year, I would like to thank all of you for your support and your partnership as we worked through this extraordinary time together to provide the very best for your children. You have the gratitude of the entire staff.

Dear Class of 2020,
Congratulations! During this week of virtual graduations, I want to wish each of you the very best now and in the future. I graduated from high school 45 years ago this week in a little town in Eastern Washington State. It’s cliché to say, but I do not know where the time has gone.
A few weeks ago, I asked staff members across the school system to help me gather some of your thoughts as you finish high school. A few hundred responses were posted to the questions I posed. So here is what some of you—the members of the Class of 2020—shared.

For those of you who have made the request, the link to the parent input form is now accessible and will be available until Friday at noon.
I know that many of us are grappling with the events that have swept the country over the past few weeks. At Highland View, we think about this in a personal and professional context. I want to point to our school vision and mission which seek to validate and recognize the potential of every child. We stand firmly in our belief that high expectations for every student are inextricably linked to a commitment to equity and anti-racism. I encourage you to access the resources some of our teachers have shared with parents, as well as those available on the MCPS website.
Have a great evening.

Staff members were in the building this week to close down rooms in preparation for summer and HVAC replacement. Teachers also took the time to gather and pack up student belongings. Work has begun in targeted areas of the building and will continue into August. We will complete our preparations this week by closing down the main office. We will continue to check voice mail and are available via email.
We were all very touched by the lovely messages from students that greeted us this week. Thank you very much for your thoughtfulness.

May 25 - Galit Zolkower: Staffing update at Highland View
Dear Highland View Community,
I wanted to let you know that our beloved art teacher, Margaret Gearin, has made the decision to retire at the end of this school year. As is the case for all committed professionals, this was a difficult decision for Ms. Gearin.
Rather than contacting Ms. Gearin directly, I am requesting, on her behalf, that beginning Friday, May 29, messages and cards be dropped off at Jenny Stavros and Lyle Turner's house (9118 Providence Avenue) -there will be a box on their front porch. Ms. Gearin would prefer to remain focused on providing the very best instruction for your children until the end of the school year.
While this is a huge loss for our community, I know you will join me in wishing Ms. Gearin a joyful retirement.
Thank you, in advance, for honoring her wishes.
Sincerely,
Galit Zolkower

May 4 - Taylor Stager: HVES PTA: Help HVES Families - Giant Gift Card Drive
Dear Highland View Families,
As we all adjust to life amid the coronavirus outbreak, some families in our community are having a particularly hard time. Many have lost jobs and are struggling to afford food and other necessities.
Ms. Zolkower has asked families in need to reach out to her and she, Ms. Burney, and Ms. Irwin-Kennedy have been helping link families to available resources. Despite this and the efforts of MCPS to distribute meals to students, many families still need support.
You can help!
Over the next few weeks, we will be holding a drive for Giant grocery gift cards to distribute to families in need. Volunteers* will coordinate the donations and will deliver them to Ms. Zolkower, who will then work with Ms. Irwin-Kennedy and Ms. Burney to distribute the gift cards to families who need them. We’re limiting the collection to only Giant cards in $25 denominations, or money for us to purchase gift cards. Giant is conveniently located for our school community, and has sufficient variety so that families can purchase items they need such as food, medications, household goods, and toiletries.
If you would like to contribute, there are two ways to participate:
Option 1: Purchase Physical Giant Cards and Drop Off
Leave the gift cards in the labeled envelope on the front door of Mark and Faith Lewis’s house (9519 Biltmore Drive). Then text Faith at 301-675-5863 to let her know it is there.
Option 2: Provide Funding via PayPal/Check/Cash
Checks and cash can also be dropped off as above. To donate via PayPal, send the money to faithmlewis@gmail.com and select friends and family. After donating, please email or text to confirm receipt.
We’re asking that families make their donations by Friday, May 15. If this is successful, we will consider extending this to continue supporting our HVES families. We will post an update showing the total amount raised at the end of each week.
If you have any questions regarding donations, please email Taylor Stager at Taylor.Stager@gmail.com or Lora Elinoff at Lora.Elinoff@gmail.com. If you know of an HVES family in need, please email Ms. Zolkower, Ms. Kennedy or Ms. Burney.
Thank you so much!
Sincerely, Taylor Stager and Lora Elinoff
*MDPTA regulations prohibit the PTA from collecting and distributing gift cards, so this is a parent-sponsored donation drive.

April 17 - Montgomery County Public Schools: MCPS to Remain Closed Until May 15
English | español | 中文 | français | tiếng Việt | 한국어| አማርኛ
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Community Members,
Today (April 17), Governor Larry Hogan and State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon announced that Maryland public schools will be closed until May 15. While we are sad and frustrated that our students and staff won’t be able to be together in schools to learn and work together in person for another month, we believe that this was the right decision for the health and safety of our students and community.
We know that the announcement of the extended closure raises many questions for our parents, students and staff—from plans for the continuation of online learning to the school calendar and graduation. This weekend, we will send messages to the community that will begin to address many of these questions and concerns. We encourage you to visit our coronavirus webpage frequently and sign up to receive important alerts through the Alert Montgomery system.
Please continue to stay safe and take care of one another.
Sincerely,
Jack R. Smith, Ph.D.

April 9 - Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich on Health Order Requiring Face Masks
Marc.Elrich@public.govdelivery.com
My mask protects you. Your mask protects me. Together, with physical distancing, vwe can stop the spread.
In these uncertain times, we all need to protect ourselves and each other. That‘s why I am asking everyone who lives and works in Montgomery County to wear a face covering while out in public.
Based on newly released guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is my recommendation, and firm belief, that if you need to go out in public – to the grocery store, pharmacy, farmers market, a workplace – you should wear a face mask.
However, please keep in mind that masks are not advised for children under two years of age or for individuals with difficulty breathing.
A face covering can be homemade but your mouth and nose should be covered.
Masks are not a substitute for physical distancing. Please continue to stay home as much as possible. You can go out for walks and exercise, but please wear a face covering while maintaining a six-foot physical distance.
This is how we beat this virus. Wearing a face covering and keeping a physical distance is how we stop the spread of the virus. If we all do this together, we will stop the spread.
And remember; my mask protects you, your mask protects me.
Marc Elrich, County Executive

April 5 - Ms Zolkower Sunday Message
Hello Highland View,
This is Ms. Zolkower with your Sunday message.
It was wonderful to hear from so many of you this week. Your questions, expressions of concern and your support for all of the staff members mean more to us than words can express. We know that there have been quite a few challenges accessing applications and platforms; it has been frustrating for us too! I am confident that access will continue to improve; I'm grateful to all of you for your patience.
Over the next couple of weeks, as we continue to build our capacity to deliver lessons digitally, I have asked teachers to focus on delivering grade level lessons to all students. Some of you have begun to inquire about supplemental materials and enrichment activities. Ms. Augusteijn has updated the Media Center portion of the Highland View website-there are great resources there. In addition, the PTA website has provided families with a number of excellent resources.
For the time being, I have asked teachers not to respond to individual requests for supplementary materials.
The schedule for the weeks of April 6 and April 14 will be posted on the Highland View website by tomorrow morning.
I intend to share updates as much as I can; be prepared to hear from me more often than only on Sunday evenings.
I'm reminding you that are no classes for students on April 9, 10 and 13.
I hope that you all continue to remain in good health and good spirits.

April 3 - MCPS - Nationwide Zoom Outage
Due to a spike in usage nationwide, the web conferencing platform Zoom is currently experiencing an unexpected partial outage nationwide. This affects the ability to join “via web browser,” which is what most students and staff use when connecting with a Chromebook. When attempting to log in and join a Zoom Web Conference, an error message appears. The error states “403 Forbidden.”
To address this, MCPS has automatically pushed the Zoom app to all student accounts. This app will show up on students’ accounts automatically. It does not require the student to install anything if they are on their Chromebooks or if they are using the Chrome browser with their MCPS-supplied Google account.
If students are using a personal device such as a PC, MacBook or an iPad, they may be prompted to install the Zoom app when attempting to connect to a meeting. After doing so, they will be allowed to join the Zoom web conference.
MCPS is updating support materials that will help parents, students and staff with any issues that may come up as they engage in online learning using our myMCPS and Google Classroom platforms. This information will be shared with the community in the coming days.

April 2 - MCCPTA - Answers from MCPS re Zoom + Chromebooks
Answers from MCPS:
Zoom for students
The MCPS Office of the Chief Technology Officer has offered this guidance for students:
Safety and privacy
There have been reports nationwide of Zoom “hacking,” and students displaying inappropriate content during virtual check-ins. In order to create a safe environment for students, MCPS has taken several additional preventative measures to tighten virtual classroom security, consistent with recent recommended safeguards by law enforcement.. MCPS will share more information over the next few days.
Chromebooks
Any child who is still in need of a Chromebook should contact their principal directly. The schools will be connecting with their specific communities over the next couple of days to determine who is still in need of a device.. They will then provide instructions on how a family can obtain a device at some point next week. Parents can also use this form to submit a specific question for their school.

Hello Highland View Community,
This is Ms. Zolkower calling with your Sunday message.
Even if it was through car windows or from a distance, it was WONDERFUL seeing so many of you on Friday afternoon during Chromebook distribution. Thank you very much for your patience as you waited in line. We will be getting tech support contact information to you very soon. If you’re encountering any issues with devices, please keep an eye out for that information.
We are very excited to begin instruction this week. Teachers will be engaged in professional development on Monday and Tuesday and will begin to reach out to students and families on Wednesday. I would ask that you keep in mind that this week is Phase I of the roll-out of Continuity of Learning. Our focus this week will be on reconnecting with students. Honestly, we can’t wait to be in touch with all of you again.
In order to continue to protect the health and safety of staff and community members, the office will remain closed. We will be checking email and voicemail and will continue to return calls and answer questions. I want to thank you, in advance, for your patience as we navigate new applications and platforms. This is an amazing community of learners!
Have a great evening.

March 27, 2020 - Important Update for Parents/Guardians of Students with Individualized Education Programs or Section 504 Plans
We know that families of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) have many questions. Throughout the last few weeks, the Office of Special Education, the Resolution and Compliance Unit, and the Office of the General Counsel have been collaborating with local and state education agencies to determine a thoughtful, measured approach to implement the continuity of learning. As the instructional environment shifts from in-person to online, students and teachers will need time to adjust.

March 19, 2020 - Message From Galit Zolkower
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Slowing the spread of COVID-19 requires everyone to follow the guidance of health officials. An important piece of this effort is social distancing. This means avoiding gathering in groups of more than 10 and keeping a safe distance from others in the group.
We have noticed some students gathering together on our fields and ignoring social distancing guidance. By doing this, they are not only putting themselves at risk but also everyone they interact with after that.
We know our students want to connect with their peers, especially in a time of crisis. Regardless of the intent, social gatherings have the potential to increase the spread of COVID-19. We ask that all members of the community follow the guidance that has been provided by the CDC and federal, state and local health officials.
Please remind your children to do their part and commit to social distancing. We are all in this together and we must all do our part.
Sincerely,
Galit Zolkower, Principal, Highland View ES
