Welcome to art with Mrs. Smith. I'm so glad you're here. I'm planning a year of growth, creativity, and connections for my students. Great things to come! 🎈
I teach because I want to be a positive role model for students. Furthermore, I believe a good education is the single most valuable thing we can possess. I firmly believe in providing positive support and encouragement for my students in and out of the classroom.
I have a special interest in social emotional learning, self-expression through the creative process, and art therapy. As much as possible, I seek to grow my knowledge in these areas through attending seminars and participating in book studies so I can support students in new ways.
This year I am moving from Middle School to High School. My goal for this year is to maximize student engagement and build community within my classroom. I look forward to using art as an engaging way to help students develop higher order thinking skills, sharpen their communication skills, and expand their worldview. High School students need a safe place to grow and make mistakes and learning in my classroom will inspire, support, and challenge them. Most importantly, it is my goal to help students to adopt a growth mindset and develop artistic thinking habits that will carry them through their future creative challenges and growth.
I welcome parents and guardians to be involved in my class, visit with me on my conference period, or shoot me an email with questions. We are always looking for guest artists on campus as well! I would love to hear what you have to say. This is going to be a spectacular year!
A year-long 9-12th visual art course. We explore an introductory curriculum that includes the four units of drawing, painting, mixed media, and sculpture. Keys concepts include the elements of art, artist growth mindsets, studio thinking habits, developing an artist portfolio, writing artist statements, and understanding the artistic process. Students will complete dozens of major projects in 2D dry media, painting, and sculpture, many of which may be displayed around campus, entered into community competitions, and shared at the Spring art shows.
