FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I Join?

Mark ORCHESTRA as your 1st or 2nd choice on your course selection sheet

Is Experience Required?

No. We will teach you everything you need to know! Our students LOVE orchestra!

What instrument will I play?

We will meet with you in the Spring to see which instrument you are interested in playing and also do a test to see if it’s the right fit.

What are the costs?

Students who choose violin or viola will need to rent the instrument from a music store. There is a monthly fee. (between $19-$30) Students will need to rent a school instrument to use in class if they're not bringing their own everyday $50/yr ($25/yr free reduced lunch program)

Students may rent a violin, viola, cello, or bass from the HMS Orchestra Program for $50/yr ($25/yr free reduced lunch program) if they are not able to rent from a music store. Supplies are limited and based on needs and on a first come first served basis.

If finances are an issue for either type of instrument, we can help so let us know! We want EVERYONE to be in the orchestra!

How many electives do I get in 6th grade?

Orchestra is a full-year course so it counts as one. Most other electives are half-year courses so you can pick two more! Pre-Athletics and dance can be taken instead of P.E. so they don’t count as an elective.

Can my child be in Orchestra & athletics in 7th Grade?

Absolutely! Most of our students are involved in other electives such as athletics and it does not conflict! We love supporting each other!

Should my student wait until 7th or 8th grade?

This is not recommended. It will put them a year behind other students in their grades.

How often do you practice after school?

We have 4 practices a year after school with the full orchestra before each end-of-grading period concert. (October, December, March, May) Individual practice at home is encouraged as often as possible.
