Before playing the whole video, pause the video on the different rhythm patterns. Ask the students if anyone can clap and say the rhythm. (quarter note = ta, paired eighth = titi, rest = shh)
Then, play the whole video and have students play along. They can choose rhythm sticks or egg shakers to play along with.
Click Here for the song and video example. Some first grade classes are familiar with the song and game, but it will be new to 1B.
Game: Choose three "cats" to act out the cat part in the space in front of the smart board
All other students are mice. Students act out actions described in song. When cats are stretching, mice must be frozen. Cats have the last verse to tag as many mice as they can.
Listen to the song, have students raise their hands when they hear the voice go away, then raise them again when they hear the voice come back in
then teach the line dance
A Section (words): heels out in front of you four times
(r, l, r, l)
hands to the sides like you're a penguin and flare them out 3x (flipper, flipper, flipper,)
All jump in the same direction
B Section: free penguin waddle
Repeat A Section
watch below video for example, but I do a different form
skip to 2:03 to see example
Love this story - set up the classroom with the hula hoops and instruments laid out in a semi circle (0:22 has a great visual example)
send students in even groups to hula hoops. Allow them to safely explore the sounds of the instruments in front of them. Once everyone is in place tell them to set the instruments in front of them in resting position and watch for their instrument in the story to be played.
At 2:07, When students are calm with silent voice, you may have them line up by color row. If they talk in line have them go sit back down and try again.
