In nominating her for the award, Assistant Principal William Wright wrote, “Through her passion and care for the arts, Carrie has encouraged and motivated students into believing not only in their artistic abilities, but their human abilities as well. The world needs more Carrie Kings.” Read more HERE
I have been privileged to teach visual art at Mt. Eden since 1993, and I feel very fortunate to work with young artists every day in my classroom. I love teaching high school art, and I care deeply about each of my students. One of my main goals as an educator is to teach students to be inquisitive, curious, and critical of the world around them through the process of creating and critiquing art and visual culture.
If you need to get in touch with me for any reason, you can reach me via email at ckking@husd.us or by phone at school (510)723-3180 extension: 62414
One of my favorite quotes is, “The expert in anything was once a beginner,” and I would add that they probably had a few good teachers help them along the way. I firmly believe that if you can hold a pencil and write your name, you CAN learn how to draw! Learning to draw is as attainable as learning to read, but you need someone to show you the tricks and tools that artists use to create realistic-looking drawings. That’s where I can help both emerging artists and those nervous about their drawings skills.

Educator of the Year, 2015, Hayward Area Historical Society
Over the years, my student’s artwork has been shown in the Sun Gallery, John O’Lague Galleria at Hayward City Hall, and at other galleries in the bay area. My students have won numerous local and national art competitions including the National Congressional Art Competition, the City of Hayward Earth Day Poster Contest, and various others. And one of my favorite students, Michael Brambila (top left), was a design contestant on Project Runway.
I always wanted to be an artist; there was never any doubt in my mind.
I was born in West Virginia and attended art school at the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. I moved to San Francisco after graduating from art school in 1992, and the Bay Area has been my home ever since.
