Finish and return your design for the Mayor's Christmas Card Contest
Please finish your design and drop it off at school by Tuesday 10/13 (tomorrow) so that I can turn it in to the Mayor's office. The deadline is Friday 10/16/20, but since I am only at school on Mondays and Tuesdays, I have to take them on Tuesday.
Make sure your design is Christmas theme and color it in. Please put your full name, your grade, and Huntington Catholic on the back- lightly (so it doesn't show through the other side of the paper). If you have made more than one picture, pick the best one to enter.
Your entry will be on display with all the other entries at the city building for the Christmas season, so do your very best and be as neat as you can. There will be winning design will become the official Christmas card for the Mayor's office. Good Luck!!
**Parents, FYI The entries will be judged by members of the Lafontaine Arts Council, who ask us to follow these guidelines:
1. The design should fit within the frame on the paper that was sent home, but it does not have to be submitted on that page- any regular printer size paper will work.2. The design should be Christmas themed.3. The name of the school and the student’s name must be on the back of the entry.4. All entries must be turned in by 4:00 pm on Friday, Oct. 16th at the Mayor’s Office, on the 3rd floor of the City Building, 300 Cherry Street. (I will be taking them on Tuesday 10/13)5. Today we are starting a Christmas picture - yes, I said Christmas! I know it is not even Halloween! Each year, the Mayor of Huntington has a contest to pick the official Christmas card design. All first and second grade students in Huntington are invited to participate. Last year, a student from our school was the winner! You could be the next winner!
I am sending home some paper with a border. Your design should fit inside that border area. You may use any paper as long as it is that size. You can turn the paper vertical or horizontal.
Think about what you see at Christmas - Baby Jesus, Christmas trees, Santa and his reindeer, Christmas lights, presents, or anything else you can think of. Then, draw a Christmas picture on your paper.
You can use anything you want to color it in- crayons, marker, colored pencil or paint. You can even cut out and glue colored paper shapes for a collage design. Do your best and take your time. You can make more than one picture if you like. We will work on these pictures next Monday too.
** Write your name in pencil on the back of the drawing. Do not put it on the front this time.
Turn in your design by next Tuesday, October 13. If you make more than one, choose your best one to turn in. I will drop it off at the Mayor’s office with the other students’ drawings. The winner will be chosen in November. All entries will be displayed at the city building for the Christmas season.

Here is another video of making the Model Magic Owl. I know some of you had difficulty viewing the video I posted last week. This video also shows how to paint the owl. Once your owl is painted, set it aside and start on the background. You can make a daytime or a nighttime background. Here is what you will need:
A piece of cardboard (sent home today)
Bottle of glue (sent home today)
Watercolor paints, Watercolor paint brush, and cup of water
Crayons
Something to cover your work area
Use a black crayon to draw the edge of the tree down one side.
Color it in. Add a branch across the top.
It can be on the left or right side.
Do you want to paint nighttime or daytime? Here are instructions for both.
Daytime instructions
Paint lots of leaves, by gently dabbing paint all over.
Just dab the colors all over the entire board.
Let it dry. This looks like Fall!
Night time instructions
Use a yellow crayon to draw a moon and color it in completely, so it will resist the paint.
Paint the sky. You can use blue, black, purple or all 3. If you wet the board first, the colors will blend a lot.
When you're done, let it dry.
Apply some glue to the back of your dry owl, then glue it to your dry board.

Today we're going to make a Model Magic Owl! I am sending home the following items for this project:
A packet of Model Magic modeling clay
A paper plate to use as a work surface
A popsicle stick or paper clip to make textures in the clay
You will also need a small thin stick to use as a perch for your owl.
Watch the video below and make your owl. Save it till next week, when we will color it and make a background for it.

Good Morning! *These are the same instructions as K and 1st grade, but the arrangement got a little bit mixed up- Sorry!
Please continue working on your fish drawing. Fill in the whole fish with color and patterns using your crayons only. Be sure to use a dark or Black crayon to outline your fish- that means to trace over the pencil lines you used to draw the fish. It is important to color the fish completely, but don't color the water- you will paint the water. you can draw some rocks on the bottom of the paper if you want, or some seaweed growing, and maybe use a white crayon to draw some bubbles for the fish! Remember, anything you want to stay white in the picture needs to be colored in with a white crayon. At the top of this page is my example fish all colored in and ready to paint water.
Finished drawing and painting supplies: paints, brush, water, and paper towel- Be sure to cover your work area.
Wet your entire paper with a wet paper towel. Just dab it on.
Add water to the blue, purple, and green paints only. Let them soak till they are nice and juicy.
Next, paint these colors all over the whole area.
Don't worry if you get a lot of paint on the fish, you can blot it up with a dry paper towel.

Hello! I hope you are having a good day today. This week, we are starting a water life picture. Think of the creatures you would find in the ocean or a river or a lake. There are probably a lot of fish in there. There are also other animals and plants, and also rocks and shells.
What shape is a fish? What shape is the body of the fish like? A fish body is most like an oval. It might be a bit pointy on ends like a football. What shape are the fins on a fish? They are usually like a triangle shape. Some fish have very pointy fins and some fish have more rounded edges on their fins. The tail on the fish may also be like a big triangle.
*Instructions:
Let's draw a fish. Use a pencil and a large paper. Draw a big sideways oval shape in the middle of the paper. Draw it lightly- in case you want to erase. The oval will be the fish body. Draw a circle for an eye at one end of the oval. Make a line for a mouth. Draw a big triangle shape at the opposite end of the fish body to make a tail. Draw another triangle on the top of the fish body for a top fin. You can add more fins if you want to.
Now, give your fish some patterns to make it interesting. Some fish have circles on them, some fish have stripes, some fish have other patterns.
Now you can color the fish with crayons. Choose the colors you want, and color neatly. Fill in just the fish, don't color the water- we will use the paint to do that later. Just color the fish. When you are done, trace over the outline of your fish with a dark or bright crayon. This will help your fish shape look neater and show up better.
Keep your fish picture till next time, when we will add some more things to it.

Good morning Artists! I sent home a bag of Art supplies for you, which you should have gotten by today. Please turn in last week's Art assignment this week. For today's assignment, I would like you to create a sketchbook cover. Use the large folded paper that I sent home for you. Lay the paper in front of you so that it opens like a book (the fold should be on the Left side). This will be the front cover of your sketchbook. Books usually have 3 things on their covers: a title, an illustration or drawing, and the author's name, and the illustrator's name. The author is the person who wrote the book, and the illustrator is the person who did the artwork. Sometimes the same person writes the book and does the artwork, so there is only one name on it. INSTRUCTIONS: Put a title at the top of the paper- it can be just Sketchbook, Art, My Art Book or anything you want. Please write your name on the cover. You will be the author/illustrator. Draw a picture (illustration) on the cover. Color it in using whatever materials you want. Send it in with your other work and I will add some pages to turn it into your Sketchbook. Then, I will send it home for you to keep. We will use this to draw in sometimes for class. Have fun!!!

Good Morning Students! Today is your first day of Art class, and I am your Art teacher Mrs. Martin! We will be having a lot of fun in Art class this year, and you will need some supplies. This week, I will send home an Art Kit for you to use for Art Class. It will have crayons, markers, a paint set, scissors, pencils, and glue. I will also send home some paper for you. Sometimes Art is messy, so you will need a paint shirt or an apron.
You will need to find a special place to keep your Art supplies and do your Art lessons. This will be your "Art Studio". It might be just a spot at the kitchen table, at a desk, or wherever your parents want you to do your work, but it can still be special!
Today, I would like you to draw a picture of yourself in your Art studio creating Art. Use a pencil to draw and color it in if you can. Please write your first name in the lower right corner of your paper. Send it in to Mrs. Carroll, with your other school work, and she will give it to me. Have fun!
