This curriculum was developed in the spirit of historically responsive education, guided by the groundbreaking work of Dr. Gholnecsar “Gholdy” Muhammad. We believe that every child deserves learning experiences that do more than deliver information—they should affirm who they are, cultivate curiosity, deepen understanding, and inspire joy.
As families prepare for the 2025 Jack and Jill of America Italy & Croatia Cultural Exchange, this home-based pre-travel curriculum invites participants to begin the journey long before departure. Each activity is thoughtfully designed around the five pursuits of Muhammad’s Historically Responsive Literacy framework:
Identity: Children explore who they are, who they come from, and how they are connected to the world—before they ever step foot in Rome or Dubrovnik.
Skills: Through writing, reading, mapping, cooking, and art-making, they sharpen essential academic and life skills in meaningful ways.
Intellect: Every lesson encourages deep thinking about geography, history, language, and culture, offering interdisciplinary insight through a global Black lens.
Criticality: We create space for families to ask important questions about whose stories are told, what is remembered, and what it means to travel with intention and awareness.
Joy: Above all, this curriculum centers joy—joy in learning, in family, in self-discovery, and in shared cultural exploration.
Designed to be flexible, fun, and accessible across generations, this curriculum transforms homes into sites of global learning and cultural connection. We hope these experiences spark conversations, strengthen identity, and prepare our children not only to see the world—but to understand their place within it.
