As we prepare to explore the beautiful coastal cities of Croatia, we pause to recognize a profound connection between this region and the legacy of one of our own.
Mother Tracy Brown, a member of the New York City Metropolitan Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, honors the memory of her father, The Honorable Ronald H. Brown, who tragically lost his life in a plane crash near Dubrovnik on April 3, 1996, while serving as U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
Secretary Brown, who was also a member of Jack and Jill in his youth, was the first African American to hold both the roles of Secretary of Commerce and Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. He dedicated his life to public service, global diplomacy, and economic opportunity for underserved communities.
A memorial room honoring his life and legacy exists in Dubrovnik, near the Rector’s Palace, within the Ronald Brown Memorial House. This quiet space, part of the Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik, stands as a tribute to Secretary Brown and the 34 others who lost their lives that day.
We share this note with respect, care, and deep admiration—and with the heartfelt understanding that remembrance is personal. We extend love and support to Mother Tracy Brown and her family as we hold this history with reverence.
