Transdisciplinary Theme: How we Express Ourselves
Central Idea: What we do in the future impacts the world around us
On Monday 17th July 2023, the Year 6 pupils at The Hundred of Hoo Academy took part in their Year 6 exhibition. This involved the children using their learner profile attributes and approaches to learning, that they had honed throughout their time at our academy, to look forward in time and consider the person that they want to become in the future.
This involved the pupils considering who they are now, the things that they enjoy, the things that interest them and reflecting on the following four areas:
Future Education
Career
Future Happiness
Impact on local/global community
When considering future education, the pupils were asked to think about what they would like to study in the future and how they would like their educational journey to progress, be that university, college, performing arts schools. They were also encouraged to consider the things that they would like to learn themselves, be that another language not offered at school, a musical instrument, origami or anything in between.
The pupils did not disappoint in both their ambition and the variety of different pathways that they were looking at for their future education. There were also lots of different skills that pupils wanted to develop outside of school such as their coaching, leadership and artistic abilities.
Linking into their future education, the pupils were also asked to consider the careers or jobs that they wanted to do and look into the paths that they could take to get there. They researched different roles and the qualifications or experience that they would need to work in these areas.
Within the class there were pupils who wanted to become doctors, fashion designers, architects, carpenters and many other roles beyond these. There were also conversations beginning between those in linked industries on how they could use each other's skills and what sounded like very informal job offers. What was great to see was also the attention that pupils were paying to the qualifications needed beyond school which really made them realise that learning is for life and not just for school.
The third area that the pupils were asked to consider was what they would do in the future for happiness. This was definitely the one that to begin with the pupils were most taken aback by but by the end had realised that this is as equally important as the previous parts they had been looking at. By the end pupils had really reflected on the things that they like to do with travel, outdoor pursuits, various exercise and family time all being popular selections.
Finally, the pupils were asked to consider how they would impact on their local/the global community in future. This part was something which began with pupils discussing the things that they had already done, within school, to have a local and global impact and they quickly realised how even small actions can have a much bigger impact. Discussing this part with pupils was an absolute joy especially at the simplicity of how some of these could be achieved such as inviting elderly neighbours over for lunch, coaching their own children’s sports teams and doing their bit within their own homes and local communities for the environment.
The opportunity to reflect on themselves and the person that they are with a clear focus was something that the pupils thoroughly enjoyed. It was a pleasure to see the progress they have all made in becoming independent IB learners during their time at the academy.
