I am on sabbatical during the 2025-2026 year and will not be available to have more students in my laboratory this year
The number of students working in the lab primarily depends on the availability of financial support I have for research and my capacity to provide meaningful mentorship and training. But, I am always interested in hearing from students who want research experience in lab and/or field! The primary characteristics I'm looking for in student researchers are curiosity, motivation and organization. Most students begin by working on ongoing projects but opportunities also exist for student-lead research projects.
If you are interested in doing research, please send me a short email describing your research interests and anything else you'd like to share about yourself, including how conducting research fits into your professional goals!
I am not accepting entering graduate students in FALL 2025, but am considering taking a student in FALL 2026
If you are interested in earning a Master’s degree in my lab, please contact me via e-mail (kmk877 (at) humboldt.edu) by sending me your resume (or CV) and a short description of how your interests and experiences align with the lab's current projects. I usually develop Master's thesis projects by extending aspects of my current research. I am, however, open to other ideas as long as the research involved falls within the realm of my expertise.
The Biology Graduate Program here at Cal Poly Humboldt offers a thesis-based Masters of Science degree. You can contact the graduate adivso for our department, Dr. Catalina Cuellar-Gempeler, to get more information about the general structure of our program. Applications to the program are usually due in February to enter the following fall.
