A uPAR (Universal Protocol for Accommodations in Reading) assessment is a tool designed to evaluate how a student reads best, particularly when they struggle with traditional text. It helps educators determine if a student would benefit from reading accommodations like text-to-speech or other assistive technology.
During the assessment, the student reads passages in different formats:
Independent Reading (reading on their own)
Reading with Support (using text-to-speech technology)
The tool measures reading comprehension in both scenarios and compares the results. This comparison helps identify whether listening to text improves the student's understanding.
Identifies Effective Support: It shows whether students comprehend text better when it is read aloud, helping educators choose the right accommodations.
Supports Decision-Making: Provides data-driven insights for IEP (Individualized Education Program) or 504 planning.
Boosts Confidence and Independence: For students who read more efficiently with text-to-speech, using this technology can reduce frustration and improve academic success.
Encourages Equity in Learning: Ensures students with reading challenges have access to content at the same level as their peers.
In short, a uPAR assessment helps schools make informed decisions about reading accommodations, ensuring students have the tools they need to succeed.
