We are neighbours, families, parents, and long-time residents who care deeply about Cleckheaton and the people who call it home.
Over recent months, we have seen our streets, homes, and gardens affected by dust and disruption from the development on the old industrial site at Westgate. Many of us have experienced health concerns, anxiety, and sleepless nights, worrying about what might be in the air we’re breathing. We’ve listened to one another’s stories at kitchen tables, in school playgrounds, in the shops, and on our doorsteps. No one should have to live with fear about their health in the place they call home.
This isn’t about politics or protest for the sake of it.
It’s about protecting our community.
The site has a long industrial past — including asbestos manufacture, chemicals, and heavy industry — and residents have raised concerns that proper safety measures have not been followed during the development. When we saw that dust controls and planning conditions were not being enforced, it became clear we could not simply hope someone else would fix it.
So we came together, because we knew we had to.
Standing up for the health and safety of our families and neighbours
Making sure the risks from the site are treated seriously and transparently
Ensuring development is carried out responsibly. Or not at all
Supporting one another through the stress, uncertainty, and impact this has brought
We are not against new homes
We are against putting people at risk
This group is built on care, courage, and community. If you have concerns, experiences, questions, or simply a desire to help, you are welcome here. Every voice strengthens us. Every shared story matters.
We are Cleckheaton Against Harmful Development
We look after each other.
And we won’t stop until our town is safe.
