A housing development in Cleckheaton is being built on land that once housed an asbestos factory, chemical dye plant, iron works, and other heavy polluting industry.
Huge clouds of dust from the site have blanketed our homes nearby. See for yourself in our Gallery.
In desperation, nearby residents commissioned independent tests, which confirmed both brown and white asbestos in our houses and gardens.
Despite these results, construction continues. Kirklees Council has neither stepped in to protect us nor helped to clean up.
No one can say with confidence what else we’ve been exposed to. Here's our Evidence.
We support good-quality, affordable and safe housing development.
But when contaminated land is handled cheaply to preserve profit margins, it’s ordinary people who pay the price, with our health and our homes.
And when the organisation meant to protect us just ignores our fears and silences our questions, who can we turn to?
That is why we formed Cleckheaton Against Harmful Development.
We are a grassroots group of local residents gathering evidence, sharing information, and working together to solve this problem.
And we need your help.
