Functions:
Receive information about what is happening inside and outside body
Directs your body in how to respond to information
Organs:
Brain
Spinal Cord
Nerves
Central Nervous System:
The brain is the control center
Spinal cord is a thick column of nervous tissue that links the brain to the peripheral nervous system
Peripheral Nervous System
All the nerves outside the central nervous system
Involved in both voluntary and involuntary actions
Connects the central nervous system to the rest of the body
How the Nervous System Works
Neurons carry nerve impulses through the body
A sensory neuron picks up the stimulus and converts it to a nerve impulse
The impusle travels along sensory neurons until it reaches an interneuron which is usually in the brain or spinal cord
The interneuron carries the impuse to a motor neuron which sends an impulse to a muscle or gland causing it to respond.
