How many students will be admitted to receive services? Is there a cap?
At this time, there is no cap. We will admit as many students who qualify. If the cohorts get too large for the DEO to manage, more staff will be added to assist with services.
Once students are accepted into a RS cohort, do they stay in it until graduation? Do the students have to reapply each school year or semester?
There are five ways that students can go from being in a RS cohort to leaving it:
Students elect to remove themselves from the program
Students don't honor grade level requisites
Students graduate
Students withdraw from Hudson Area Schools
Out-of-district, qualified students stop paying for services
Students only need to reapply to receive services if at some point the students have left the program due to one of the situations listed above. Otherwise, once students have been accepted, they maintain their status in a RS cohort.
Will we only work with students who want to attend one of the 50 most highly-selective institutions, or can students explore other institutions they want help with?
We continually focus on strengthening our relationships with the top 50 institutions, so those will be most often referenced and visited, however, we will work with students to prepare them for other similar caliber institutions. The services will be individualized, which means we will support students on whatever pathway is the best fit for them. It will be made very clear, though, that these services are preparatory for highly-selective (20% acceptance or less) institutions, so if the school they are passionate about pursuing doesn’t fall into this category, it will be up to students to decide if they want to continue with the expectations of the RS service.
Is RS modeled after programs being done elsewhere?
There are components of what RS offers that are being done at other schools, but what RS has packaged together is unique to Hudson and based on our research of what students need.
What's the time commitment expectation of RS students?
We know that RS students are pulled in many directions, and that their days demand a lot from them. The goal is for RS students to spend around 1-hour a week on tasks. There are exceptions to that for opportunities like campus visits, career fairs, among others, but those are announced weeks in advance, are optional, and are not weekly occurrences.
Is this meant more for students who have an idea of what they want to do and/ or where they want to attend college?
It is meant for students who have goals, plans, etc. so they can be better supported to achieve those. It's also intended for students who are at the starting point with considering their futures, and to help them discover what their passions are, and what would be the best fit for their adult lives.
