Financial Aid can come in different forms - scholarships, federal grants, federal loans, work study money. In order to receive federal aid, you must complete the FAFSA every year (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is completed online - www.fafsa.ed.gov It is FREE to fill out a FAFSA - if you are asked to pay a fee, then you are on the wrong website.
OCTOBER 1 -- this is the date that the FAFSA becomes available. DO NOT BEGIN OR SUBMIT YOUR FAFSA UNTIL AFTER DECEMBER. You should complete the 2025-2026
FAFSA Form. Some aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Apply ASAP after December 1. You will use the 2023 tax return to complete the FAFSA.
Each school will have a Priority Deadline for filing the FAFSA - have your FAFSA completed by that date in order to be eligible for aid. It is YOUR responsibility to know the deadlines for the schools you will be applying to. Every school will list the priority deadline on their website.
You will need the following information for BOTH the student and parent to complete the FAFSA:
FSA ID (do this first) - Create at FSAID.ed.gov - this is your electronic signature
Social Security Number
Driver’s License number (if you have one)
Federal Income Tax Return, W-2s, and other records of money earned. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool can transfer your tax information into the FAFSA. If the "LINK TO IRS" button is available, click it.
Bank statements (checking and savings) and records of investments (stocks, bonds, and real estate other than the home you live in)
Information on untaxed income (e.g., child support)
List of schools being considered (be sure to list ALL schools you plan on applying to)
You will receive your FAFSA results within a few weeks – the Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR confirms the information you reported on the FAFSA and tells you how much your family will need to contribute to your education – the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC is an index number and NOT a dollar amount. The EFC is used to determine the amount of federal aid you will qualify for.
The colleges you list on your FAFSA form will receive your financial information and will use your FAFSA/EFC information to determine your Financial Aid Package – this could include a variety of types of aid: Scholarships or Grants (money that does not need to be paid back); Loans (money that is paid back, usually at lower interest rates than other types of loans); Work Study (a job on campus). Schools generally notify a student of their award packages in the spring.
If you have questions regarding FAFSA, you should contact the Financial Aid Office of the school you plan on attending. The financial aid officers are happy to assist you in completing your FAFSA.
