“Hey, the 70s called they, want their hair back,” is probably something the New York brother duo Brian and Michael D’Addario, more commonly known as The Lemon Twigs, hear often. This group has always been on my radar but I had never given them the time of day. However, just a couple weeks ago I came across them while meandering through the internet and I was blown away. What they are doing musically is exactly what I was looking for, seeming that everyone else that was making music like them is either super old or six feet under. In recent years, rock and pop music respectively have been lacking the irresistibly catchy and creatively arranged tracks like those from artists of the past, Todd Rundgren and Pet Sounds era Beach Boys. The Lemon Twigs are doing just that while also putting a modern twist on it to satisfy the new generation.
The D’Addario’s were both bound for stardom, coming from a father who was a session musician and has credits in TV commercials and studio recordings from the 60s and 70s. Brian, the oldest, got his start acting in theater productions such as Les Miserables and The Little Mermaid. On the other hand, Michael made his runs on the big screen straing in such films as Sinister. But as they got older and branched out of their acting careers, they leant towards music and created The Lemon Twigs.
The Lemon Twigs take inspiration mainly from music of the 60s and 70s which creates a stigma around them for some feeling that actual artists from those time periods simply did it better. What some people can’t seem to notice is that rather than “stealing”, what The Lemon Twigs are doing is bringing attention to a whole genre and vibe of music that has been lacking in recent years. A lot of people out there pine for music of the past and The Lemon Twigs are here to supply that fix.
With some of their earlier projects such as Do Hollywood, The Twigs have a more flamboyant and ambiguous sound that would cater to those who are fans of Sparks or the Glam Rock genre in general. But as years have changed, so have The Twigs, with them on their most recent album, Everything Harmony giving off a much more smooth and easy vibe making tunes that could be straight off of a Teenage Fanclub album.
What The Twigs are doing is truly refreshing and an amazing throwback for those who care for the music of the 60s and 70s. Going on a steady rise, it is safe to say that these guys are only going to get more popular and introduce more people to the sounds of past generations. If the sounds of The Lemon Twigs seem to appeal to you, make sure to mark your calendar for their new album A Dream Is All We Know coming out on May 3rd, 2024.
