The Steinert Boys Lacrosse Team is excited about what this new season will bring. The program’s coaches, Bob Ziegler (Varsity), Corey Siwiec (Junior Varsity), and Rob Collis (Freshman), have been guiding the boys in strategies, sportsmanship, and skills. The team is working hard as they practice the fundamentals of the sport while pushing themselves to put in their best effort in reaching their goals.
The team has some obstacles to overcome as they must adapt after losing many significant players to graduation who played a bulk of the minutes last year. They lost several of their best offensive and defensive players so the boys will have to step up to get close to where they finished last year.
This year will be a rebuilding season. The team will regroup, find new rhythms, and discover ways to run the team to become successful. It is time for other players to explore new opportunities while stepping in as leaders and contributing in significant ways. To fill in the gaps of very quality senior athletes, the team is practicing hard and building the chemistry amongst themselves.
This year’s group seems like they are going to do a great job in forming that leadership role that is necessary to reach victory. Seniors Christopher Horchuck, Joe Marrazzo, and Mason Waznis, along with juniors Matt Iraca and Zack Messeroll have exceptionally taken on that role so far and are leading by example.
During preseason, the boys played in the winter league at Centercourt Lacrosse, an indoor facility, to be ready to get back in action. They also have been working on strengthening, agility, and conditioning. They came prepared and are ready to fight against any obstacle that comes their way.
It is time for the underclassmen to step up, as well. Most of the players are making the jump from junior varsity to varsity this year, and although there might be growing pains of making that jump, the coaches believe that the team will do their best. Coach Ziegler is excited for the younger players to play at the varsity level and help the team to succeed and grow.
The team’s goals this season are to win the CVC division, go undefeated in the township, and win a state playoff game. Their first two games are at home over spring break. They will play Monroe Township High School on April 2nd and North Brunswick Township High School on April 4th.
“Strength and honor” is the team’s motto. Whether the team wins or loses, they will play their hardest while being fair and respectful. This short but strong phrase is a reminder to the boys to have mutual respect for one another and trust amongst themselves.
Coach Ziegler said, “We are hoping to have the student section come out to the new turf field and watch us play.” With the cheers and support of the Spartan family, the boys can reach their goals and have a successful season, so come out to support the Steinert Boys Lacrosse Team!
*The Boys Lacrosse team as of May 20th have finished their season with a record of 6-11.
