Alyssa Hendrickson and Lauren Hardiman
This year's girls' varsity soccer season ended with great success. With a total of 14 wins, one tie, and only six losses, these girls have much to be proud of. Additionally, they made it to the semi-finals in both the Mercer County Tournament and the State Tournament.
In the first round of the Mercer County Tournament, the girls went against 4th-seed Princeton Day School at Princeton Day School’s home field. Three days before this game, they lost to Princeton Day School 2-1 in double overtime, so there was no question that this was going to be a good game. The game went into double overtime and with only a few minutes remaining, Reilly Klein took a shot that slipped right through the goalie’s hands. This brought the girls to the semifinal round of the tournament, versus 1st-seed Pennington. Pennington is one of the best teams in the country, but the girls were able to keep the score down to 2-0 at the end of the first half. Although they lost, they fought hard and ended with a score of 5-0.
In the first round of the States Tournament, the team was up against Brick Township. The girls were able to come out with a 3-0 win and make it to the second round. The next game would lead to an extremely challenging face-off. They were off to play Jackson Memorial on our home field. This game stayed extremely defensive as the back line and goalie, Emily Hardiman were being immensely pressured. Luckily, in the second half the girls had a quick break up the field and junior Mia Garafalo scored the game-changing goal. The game ended with a 1-0 win for Steinert and they were off to the semi-finals. The girls went into this game ready to play as they were against Middletown South. With four starters out with injuries for this game, it was important that every player went in and gave it their all. Unfortunately, the game ended in a 2-0 loss but the girls fought until the very end.
The Steinert Girls Soccer Program has many accomplishments to be proud of this year. Some players won individual awards as well. Senior goalie Emily Hardiman won goalie of the year and was selected to the all-CVC first team. Senior defender Alyssa Hendricksen won Defender of the Year and was also selected to the all-CVC first team. Junior Reilly Klein and Senior Brenna Riddell made the second team and Junior Jasmine Ortega was selected to the third team. A special shout out to the honorable mentions, Mia Garafalo, Mia Tramo, and Claudia Szmyd. Coach Mike Hastings is very proud of this team and how far they have come. We are excited to see how this team does next year with so much talent returning.
