The Varsity Boys Soccer team had an amazing season this year. With a final record of 16 wins, 4 losses and 2 ties, the boys advanced to the semi-final of the Mercer County Tournament as well as the State Tournament Sectional Finals. Which was the farthest the varsity team has made it in 5 years. The team also reached a final state ranking of #25, the highest ranked team Coach Tessein has ever coached.
On October 16, the varsity boys faced off against rival Lawrence High School. After defeating Lawrence earlier in the year with a final score of 5 to 1, this was set to be a good rematch. After a full 100 minutes including double overtime, the boys won in penalty kicks. Senior goalie Evan Sinkleris made two saves in the penalty shootout, including the game winning save, sending the boys to the semi-finals of the Mercer County Tournament. Steinert was then up against one of the CVC’s toughest teams, Princeton High School. Unfortunately, the boys fell short and were eliminated after losing 1-0. After this tough loss the team showed a lot of character by keeping their heads up and getting ready for the state tournament.
The first game of the state tournament was against crosstown rival, Hamilton West. With a lot of bad blood between the two teams it was set to be a physical game. Thomas Kovalcik’s goal in the second half of the game sent the boys through to the quarterfinals. Against another familiar opponent next, the team played Colts Neck. The team beat Colts Neck 2-1 earlier in the season in a hard fought match, making this an even tougher game. Despite trailing 3-1 in the second half with less than 15 minutes left, the team won 5-3. Anthony Durling converted on a penalty kick with 11 minutes left and less than a minute later Tyler Tafrow scored a world class goal to take the lead. David Ludian secured the win by scoring with 10 seconds left. The boys defeated Lawrence High School for the third time this year with a final score of 1-0 to advance to the state sectional finals. Tyler Tafrow scored the goal directly from a corner kick. The boys lost in the state sectional final against Robinsville in a penalty shootout.
Various players on the team won many achievements and got recognition for their great seasons. Seniors Anthony Durling, Liam Gardiner, Nick Vernon and Jake Berish were recognized by the coaches of the CVC. Anthony Durling and Liam Gardiner were named First Team All-CVC, with Anthony Durling winning CVC Midfielder of the year for the second consecutive year. As well, Nick Vernon and Jake Berish were named All-CVC third team. Anthony Durling, Liam Gardiner and Nick Vernon were also recognized for their All-State honors. Anthony Durling was named a Regional All-American for the State of New Jersey.
