The addition of metal detectors in all three Hamilton high schools and middle schools, had some students shaking their heads and not looking forward to the changes in their morning routines. While this is a change that certain people may have been skeptical about at first, it turns out that the implementation of the systems has been seamless, and is a only a minor change in the morning entry of members of the school community.
With the news that security systems would be implemented into schools, most students were left confused and were complaining about these systems before school had even started. Many people agreed that this would be a nuisance in the morning. Many students were assuming that it would make them late to class, there would be a line out the door, or that it would just be very unorganized since it is something that everyone had to get used to. However, these assumptions were completely changed after the first week of school. Everything went very smoothly the first week. There was no line to be waiting in, no one was regularly late to class, and it was extremely organized. Even on the first day of school with all of the students going through the new system, it was a fairly easy process and transition for everyone to make. When asked about her opinions on it, a junior stated, “I thought it would be something annoying to have to go through every day, but now I’m just used to it”. However, there are still some students that find it annoying, even if it is a small change. A senior shared her opinions on it, saying, “I see why they’re useful, but the way we have to do it seems kinda pointless”.
With this being said, it is good that mostly everyone was able to be accustomed to this new system and routine. The metal detectors allow students to feel more safe and comfortable in a place where being safe should be normal. Another senior said, “They make me feel more safe and I feel well protected while in school”. The overall goal of these metal detectors was to make students feel more safe, and thankfully, this goal was achieved.
