The Steinert Girls Varsity Field Hockey team finished their season on October 20, 2022. Notable victories this year consist of Ewing, West, and Nottingham. These games showed off the team’s drive to win and the hard work they put into the sport. One of the best games to flaunt the Spartan work ethic was the game against Hamilton High West. This game was on October 12, which was also the team’s Senior Day. It was a bittersweet moment for them, signifying the end of the seniors’ field hockey careers. The game was exciting, filled with intensity, and full of fans, generating the largest crowd seen for this sport within the last few years. During the game, goals were scarce. In fact, the game went into overtime 0-0. However, within the first thirty seconds, Adriana Truelove popped a goal in the cage, assisted by Gia Dimeglio.
Through the duration of this season, goals were scored by Sabrina Beckman, Gia DiMeglio, Gracyn Nutt, Ceara O’Neal, Adriana Truelove, and Kaylee Zoltanski. Defensively, key players of this team were Diana Arias, Katelyn Haubert, Aliana Longo, Caitlin McCarthy, Sadie Pattik, and Ashley Wisser. Rounds of applause are deserved for the goalies. Emma Constance saved 76 shots on goal, while newcomer Jada Oczkowski had 20 saves on the varsity level. Midfielder Amber DeWitt also deserves some recognition; her intensity allowed for her to be a powerhouse on the field, bettering everyone she plays with. Her actions and accomplishments gave her a nice shoutout in the Trentonian by writer Joe O’Gorman.
Senior Gracyn Nutt gave her opinion on the season. “This season has been one that was filled with challenges and triumphs. My teammates throughout the whole thing always had a fun and encouraging sense of spirit which in my opinion is why we took this season to the next level. Though we played well trained and organized teams, we had a drive that can’t be taught and fought the hard battles together. The season was overall a really fun experience and I'll miss the girls but I’m glad I have many memories to look back at.”
Next season, a number of things will change. The current seniors will be focusing on their future endeavors. This will drastically change the roster, since over half of the girls were seniors. Along with that, the program is reshaping itself, growing more conditioned and strict in a sense of fitness. We look forward to seeing what the girls make of the 2023-2024 season, and can’t wait to see their success!
