The Steinert Varsity Football team is currently 5-4, already outperforming their record from the last 4 years. This year’s team has shown itself to be versatile and adaptive in the face of both victories and defeats. After losing a game against Hightstown, the team recovered with two wins against Lawrence and Cherry Hill East.
On October 21, the team won 31-7 against Lawrence. Ryan Belford began the game with a 10 yard run and scored the first touchdown, bringing the initial score to 7-0. In the second quarter, Joe Framo scored a touchdown with a pass from Braeden Petro. The second half of the game saw two more touchdowns by Ryan and Braeden and a 21-yard field goal from Greg Casimir. Varsity captain Jack Lambert’s performance also earned him a position as the 12th Man Touchdown Club’s Offensive Lineman of the Week.
The Spartans continued to win, defeating Cherry Hill East 21-12 in a crossover game. Cherry Hill East started strong with a touchdown, leading the game with 6-0. However, the team wasn’t discouraged. They quickly caught up and overtook Cherry Hill with a touchdown by Wilfred Kamara and an extra point by Greg Casimir. During the second half of the game, Anthony Torres and Wilfred scored two more touchdowns and scored extra points for each one. Wyatt Bibber also earned 1.5 sacks and 4 tackles and became the 12th Man’s Special Teams Player of the Week.
The winning streak ended on November 5 when the team lost against Red Bank Regional in the semifinal round of the NJSIAA regional invitational tournament. As our Spartans have shown before, however, they will not let one loss get them down. Their next match is on Thanksgiving against West. If the team wins this game, they will have their best record in five years, matching their record from 2017.
