The Steinert Boys Varsity Soccer Team finished their season with a record of 12-5-1. Coach Anthony Tessein’s team was second in the CVC’s Valley Division, and ranked seventh in the Trentonian’s Top Area Teams in Mercer County. Junior Captain Anthony Durling finished third in the CVC with 17 goals, and the goaltending of junior Evan Sinkleris, along with the strong defensive play of Captain Chase Schultz, senior Lane Sharko, junior Liam Gardner and sophomore Jake Reilly, gave the Spartans the top shutouts total in the CVC with 8.
On October 8th, the senior boys, Gabriel Avila, Nelson Guerra, Julian Moulds, Layne Scharko, Chase Schultz, Colin St. John, and Matthew Terry, were all celebrated and recognized by their teammates, peers, and coaches. The boys celebrated their senior day with a victory of 6-0 against Nottingham right before our Homecoming pink-out game
Aside from practices and games, the boys found ways to spend time with each other. The pasta parties, bagels after morning practices, fundraisers, and community service opportunities all contributed to bringing the team together. October 19, there was a fundraiser at Honeygrow, where 20% of sales were donated to soccer program.
On October 22nd, the boys volunteered at The Miracle League of Mercer County and helped the participants play baseball. From assisting them in hitting the ball to running the bases with them, the boys did their best to bring joy to these kids. Although the boys had a game later that day, they stuck to their commitment and worked together as a team to make the experience memorable for all of the kids. It was an overall positive experience for the team and they believe that it was fantastic being able to help the Miracle League players have a good time.
Senior Captain, Chase Schultz commented on the team’s performance throughout the season. “At Steinert, we try to play an attractive brand of futball. We possess the ball as much as we can, all one-two touches. Of course, we try to score as much as possible, but we really pride ourselves on our defense. Layne, Liam, and I have done really well keeping the ball out of the net this season, and Evan has really stepped up in his role as the keeper. At times keeping a clean sheet is just as exciting as the win itself. Communication is really important, and I pride myself on being really vocal on the pitch. The more instructions and information I can relay to my teammates, the better we’ll do.”
Schultz believes that being a captain is about being a great leader, keeping things organized, putting out any fires, and motivating the team, and it seems like not only he but also Senior Captain Nelson Guerra and Junior Captain Anthony Durling did a great job in leading the team to victory.
On October 28th, Steinert’s Varsity Boys Soccer team defeated Lawrenceville High School in their first round of The NJ Group III Central State Tournament. Anthony Durling scored both goals with assists from Matt Terry and Colin St. John. Goalie Evan Sinkleris had 8 saves, including a late kick save to preserve the lead. Unfortunately, the dreams of a state title ended three days later with a 3-0 loss to Neptune. However, this year’s team performed well-above expectations under the senior leadership and with Coach Tessein’s steady hand at the helm, this year’s team performed well-above expectations, and the Steinert boys soccer program continues to be one of the most competitive and consistent in the county.
