In this 2022-2023 school year, Steinert High School got a new Athletics Director, but it’s not someone that is new to our community. The new Athletics Director is Mr.Bill James. Mr. James has been teaching at Steinert for many years and is very excited to step into his new administrative role this year.
Mr. James has been an educator for 34 years, beginning at Notre Dame and then moving to Steinert where he taught history teacher for the previous 28 years. He taught several courses including Government, World History, Honors History II and AP American History. However, his contributions were not limited to the classroom. He also coached football, ice hockey, and track. When asked what he would miss most about being in the classroom, he responded, “I will definitely miss the daily interaction with the students. Already this year I see the students in hallways and at the games, but it isn’t quite the same as it was in the classroom.”
However he is very excited about his role as Athletic Director. He explained for those who don’t know, that his role involves setting the game schedules, getting the fields ready, ensuring each team has the proper equipment, arranging all of the buses and arranging for the officials for each game. He also said, “I love seeing students in a different way, not just academically. I get to see so many different students participating in athletics at many different levels. I find it exciting because every day I get to see students doing something that they really enjoy.”
When asked what the biggest challenge of this job would be, his response was, “Definitely the weather related things that will force me to cancel a game. Also the bus situation is a challenge, making sure that people can get to where they need to be on time. These are challenging because so much is out of my control.”
One thing is for sure, Mr. James knows what it means to be a part of the Steinert High School community. Even though he is in a new and different role this year, he is sure to be a reliable figure, watching over the coaches and student athletes of the place he has called home for 29 years.
