The Girls Varsity Soccer Team is off to a torrid start to their season, going 10-0, and even gaining a ranking of 18th in the state. The ladies are led by the dynamic duo of seniors Juliana and Adriana Ryder, along with several other players who have been contributing to what is shaping up to be one of the best seasons for the program in a number of years.
The team has lots of depth, which allows coach Michael Hastings to substitute players in key positions to give them a break and also to strategize during the game. This is a wonderful luxury to have.
The defense has been very strong, led by junior Alyssa Hendrickson in the center, along with senior Aleesia Amato, sophomore Nadia Gray and junior Brenna Riddell. They have been strong all year, and the solid goaltending of Jillian Jones has led them to seven shutouts in the ten games played.
The highlight of the season so far has been the 1-0 overtime victory over Allentown, which gave Coach Michael Hastings his 100 career victory. Adriana Ryder pounced on a loose ball and raced in to score the golden goal to give Stinger the milestone win in spectacular fashion.
Coach Hastings explained that the win is about more than soccer. “High school soccer is more than the soccer part. We’re teachers, we’re educators first, so the idea is you want to teach them life lessons. It’s something bigger than yourself being part of a team.” With that kind of leadership along with depth and talent, the sky's the limit for this team.
