Boys Soccer Off to Strong Start, Despite Loss of 14 Seniors
The Boys Varsity Soccer Team had their hands full this year, losing 14 seniors to graduation last year, but Head Coach Anthony Tessein has put the right players in the right places so far, as the team has started 8-2, is optimistic about the road ahead.
Junior team captain Anthony Durling has led the way with 11 goals so far this year. His best performance came against Hightstown, where they trailed 1-0 with only a few minutes to go. First he scored on a penalty kick to send the game to extra time, and then he pounced on a rebound off of a Colin St. John corner kick and blasted it into the upper corner for the win.
All four defenders graduated from last year’s team, which was definitely a cause for concern. However, senior captain Chase Schultz, senior Layne Sharko, and junior Liam Gardner are doing a great job of defending, working strong together to anchor a solid defense in front of senior goaltender Josh Ortega.
Some of the returning players from last year have been contributing to the team’s success as well. Senior Colin St. John, and juniors Nick Vernon and Jake Berish have been creating opportunities and finishing shots. Berish most recently found the back of the net in an overtime victory versus Lawrence at a night game at Veterans Park.
Senior Captain Nelson Guerra commented on the team’s performance so far. “We came into the season with a lot of questions at different spots, but guys have really stepped up and done really well. We definitely are still finding our chemistry, but coach has a great system in place that everyone is following, so I think we can do even better than we have so far.”
