Choir

Choir rehearsals and lessons are all during the school day!

There are 4 different choirs at Hillsborough High School:

CONCERT CHOIR

All 9th graders start in Concert Choir with this full year course.  Concert Choir is a vocal ensemble emphasizing the performance of choral literature of a variety of genres and styles. It builds upon middle school experiences including physical foundations of singing, sight-singing, rhythm, intonation, tone quality, and mechanics of music. Introductions to ear training, music history, and conducting are also taught. A piano accompanist (approved by the Choral Director) is also eligible for credit in this course. Students are required to attend rotating sectional lessons during the school day in addition to a daily in-school rehearsal. Attendance is required at additional evening rehearsals and all performances. Upon the completion of the course and a successful audition, students are eligible for Mixed and Treble Chorale, or may take Concert Choir again in future years. Doing Concert Choir in 9th grade will take care of your visual & performing arts graduation requirement!

MIXED CHORALE

Mixed Chorale is an auditioned vocal ensemble emphasizing the refined performance of choral literature for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass (SATB) voices in grades 10-12. Musical selections are chosen to represent the highest quality of choral compositions of all genres and styles as well as to challenge students in all aspects of music theory and choral performance. This course further develops the students’ choral sound, individual musicianship and awareness of choral music history. A piano accompanist (approved by the Choral Director) is also eligible for credit in this course. Students are required to attend additional evening rehearsals and performances in addition to daily in-school rehearsal and rotating sectional lessons. Acceptance into this ensemble will only be for the following school year; all students must audition annually.

TREBLE CHORALE

Treble Chorale is an auditioned vocal ensemble emphasizing the refined performance of choral literature for Soprano and Alto voices (SSA and/or SSAA) in grades 10-12.

SHOW CHOIR

Show Choir is an auditioned ensemble that provides the opportunity for select music students to learn jazz vocal music in a show atmosphere. Students will study vocal technique, microphone technique, choreography, and stage presence. Students enrolled in this course are expected to attend mandatory rehearsals/performances which may occur outside of school hours (advanced notice of dates and times will be provided in September). Special dress apparel may be required for performances.

Do vocal courses receive college prep or honors credit?

YES!  Both Mixed Chorale and Treble Chorale award college prep (CP) credit in your first year and honors (H) credit for your second year.  Seniors in the ensemble receive honors credit even if it is their first year.
