Standard 2.3: Citizen
From the ISTE website (2024):
Educators inspire students to positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world.
a. Create Positive Experiences - Educators create experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible contributions and build inclusive communities online.
b. Evaluate Resources for Credibility - Educators foster digital literacy by encouraging curiosity, reflection, and the critical evaluation of digital resources.
c. Model Safe, Legal, Ethical Practices - Educators mentor students in safe, legal, and ethical practices with digital tools and content.
d. Manage, Protect Data - Educators model and promote management of personal data, digital identity, and protection of student data.
Reflection:
What does it mean to be a good digital citizen? Zoey in my 5th grade class answers, "It means that you respect others, protect information, stay safe online, stand up to cyber bullying, and balance your time on electronics."
The purpose of ISTE-E Standard 2.3 is to promote this kind of answer through instruction and by modeling safe, legal, and ethical practices. We also seek to give our students the skills and tools to protect themselves from the dangers that are out there, from cyberbullies to identity thieves to disinformation. It is important that we model good digital citizenship as well to set a good example. Teachers should make sure they are following fair use guidelines when using the work of others, for example. They should also protect private information and harden their cybersecurity such as by strengthening passwords. Finally, they should model safe and appropriate use of social media including on their personal accounts.
Featured Artifact:
For my primary artifact related to this standard, I share my Digital Citizenship Study Guide for 7th grade. It goes over the major topics of digital citizenship in detail, and has been updated over the years. It has been my custom to allow students to use this study guide while they take the test. This is because it has to do with safety, and them learning the information, even if it is while they are taking the test, is more important than the points I might take off because they hadn't studied it beforehand.
