Standard 2.2: Leader
From the ISTE website (2024):
Educators seek opportunities for leadership to support student empowerment and success and to improve teaching and learning.Â
2.2.a: Advance a Shared Vision - Shape, advance and accelerate a shared vision for empowered learning with technology by engaging with education stakeholders.
2.2.b: Advocate for Equitable Access - Educators advocate for equitable access to technology, high-quality digital content, and learning opportunities to meet the diverse needs of all students.
2.2.c: Model Digital Tool Use - Model for colleagues the identification, exploration, evaluation, curation and adoption of new digital resources and tools for learning.
Reflection:
A leader inspires others to greatness with these qualities:
They communicate a vision
Persuade others to get behind their vision
Organize the steps and resources
Take responsibility when something doesn't go right
Give credit to their team members when things do go right
Never stop learning
Have the right balance of looking at the big picture, but also paying attention to the little details
Staying calm under pressure
A school technology leader often has multiple roles, bouncing between the educational and the technical sides of their job. Communication skills are very important, and they need to consider many different factors when making decisions. Effective leaders need to be able to research technology tools that are available to address the school's goals. They then need to be able to explain their findings and coordinate a successful implementation of the new technology. Finally, they should take an active role in the professional development and support, modeling use of the new technology where possible.
I seek to demonstrate leadership skills such as these as both a technology coordinator and a teacher. I work with the administration and other teachers to implement technology and new programs. Some examples are interactive boards/panels, student devices and Google Classroom. I also have taken the opportunity to start and continue to lead two extracurricular activities at my school: a Robotics Club and a Photography Club.
Featured Artifact:
There was a great need for leadership in March of 2020, as the COVID pandemic forced us into remote learning with no time to prepare. This is a video that I prepared that first week we were at home, which I emailed to the teachers on how to do remote learning using Google Meet and Screencastify. It is, of course, an example of modeling digital tool use. However, I believe it also is an example of advancing our shared vision of continuing the learning for students even though we could no longer be in person. Finally, the tools I demonstrated are also helpful in providing equitable access, since they help teachers provide instruction in multiple ways to learners who were not going to have their needs met with just asynchronous notes and worksheets.
