Abstract:
Popular culture articles continue to show sexism towards women which further fuels the struggles female musicians in particular face. The aim of this paper is to analyze how authors of articles about Taylor Swift view her after the release of her album evermore through a content analysis to determine if sexism is present and discuss how the gender of the author may affect their portrayal of Swift. Ultimately, this study concluded that there was minimal misogyny directed towards Swift, with a majority of the articles being positive. Further, in the instances of sexist comments, the male authors were more openly misogynistic while female authors showed internalized sexism. These findings of this study have implications on the music industry and how female musicians and celebrities are perceived by media outlets.
