History

Hollywood Schoolhouse was established in 1945 as Small Fry Nursery School, and later the Hollywood Little Red Schoolhouse, by Ruth and Robert Pease. Ruth grew up in an environment where she was the subject of prejudice and social exclusion, and from the beginning envisioned a school where all children were accepted, loved and welcomed for who they are as individuals.

For more than 23 years, Hollywood Schoolhouse served the community as a warm and loving Preschool where all were welcome. In 1970, Ruth and Robert passed the school on to their daughter, Debbie Wehbe, who, with her husband, Ferris Wehbe, carried on Ruth’s traditions and educational philosophy. In 2002, Hollywood Schoolhouse was granted nonprofit 501(c)(3) status and became an independent school. Today, Hollywood Schoolhouse serves the families of more than 300 children, about a quarter of which receive some form of Tuition Assistance.

Hollywood Schoolhouse was founded as a community school and has always enjoyed a close relationship with its immediate neighborhood. Through its participation in Big Sunday, The Police Activities League, ongoing neighborhood clean-ups, and much more, the Schoolhouse has enjoyed its role in the recent renaissance of Hollywood. The Schoolhouse continues to be a driving force within the local community, providing opportunities for neighborhood meetings, enrichment opportunities for neighborhood children, and community events.
