Welcome to first grade! My name is
Ms. Thompson and I’m delighted to have your child in my first grade class this year.
This is my 21st year teaching first grade at Hillsboro Primary School. My educational background includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from University of Missouri, St. Louis and a Master’s Degree in Education from Missouri Baptist University.

School Supplies
Please label all school supplies with your child’s name. This list contains items from the standard first grade supply list that can be found on the district website.
Essentials
Please label the following essential supplies with your child’s name:
Backpack large enough to hold folders
Pencil box (8x5)
2 Plastic folders
1 kid’s pair of Fiskar’s scissors
6 glue sticks
1 large eraser
1-24 pack of sharpened Ticonderoga #2 pencils
3-24 count packs of crayons
1-4 pack of Black Expo Chisel Tip (large) dry erase markers
1 pair of headphones (NO earbuds)
2 spiral notebooks (wide ruled)
The following essential supplies do not need to be labeled with your child’s name:
2 large boxes of tissues
1 roll of paper towels
1 container of baby wipes
Optional Classroom Donations Needed:
Large Boxes of Cheerios/Toasted O’s/Graham Crackers
Gallon Size Storage Bags (Ziploc or any brand)
Behavior Management Plan
I utilize positive behavior interventions and restorative practices to support students in making safe, respectful and responsible choices.
Classroom Rules and Expectations:
Listen when others are talking.
Follow directions.
Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
Work quietly and do not disturb others.
Show respect for school and personal property.
Work and play in a safe manner.
School Wide Expectations:
Be safe.
Be respectful.
Be responsible.
When students meet expectations, they may receive the following:
Specific positive praise
School wide/classroom incentives
Positive notes home
Through the year, I will be teaching/reteaching expectations and utilizing restorative practices to support students.
When students do not meet expectations, they may receive the following:
Reminders of the procedures & expectations
Conference with the teacher; may include Think Sheets
Consequences relevant to the behavior; may include loss of privilege
Depending on the frequency or severity of behavior events, students may meet with a behavior interventionist or principal. You will be notified of minor events that continue to occur or major events that result in an office referral.
Communication
Your child will have a daily folder this year. Please check it each evening for notes, completed work, etc.
Your child will have a daily communication calendar in their folder. I will stamp your child’s calendar daily, and at times add notes. Please initial the calendar each evening.
Email will be the most frequent way I communicate with families, This includes weekly newsletters, reminders and individual communication.
Please contact the office to notify of any transportation changes.
Homework
Each evening your child is encouraged to read for 15 minutes. As the school year progresses, you will receive information about homework.
Things to Know to Make the 1st Grade Year Flow
Email will be the most frequent means of communication. Please check for messages daily.
Classroom newsletters and messages will be sent via email.
Please read with your child every day. It is very important and makes a difference.
Students should bring their daily folder and water bottle to and from school each day they attend. Please check/empty your child’s folder and wash/refill the water bottle each evening.
Please contact the office to make changes in your child’s transportation.
Any money sent to school with your child should be sent in an envelope/Ziploc bag with your child’s name, purpose and amount. Lunch accounts can be paid online.
Please bring any necessary medication in the original container to the nurse’s office. The medication will be kept in the nurse’s office.
If your child has restrictions due to injury/illness please send a doctor’s note.
Please have your child wear tennis shoes/closed toe, rubber soled shoes to school. Tennis shoes are required for outdoor recess and PE.
The temperature of the classroom varies. Your child may want to keep a sweater or jacket in his/her backpack.
Children may send store bought, unopened, individually wrapped snacks to school to share for their birthday.
We will have a short snack time during the day. Please send a small healthy snack to school daily for your child.
At times, children may forget to bring a snack. If you would like to make a donation for those times, a box of Cheerios would be appreciated.
