While still healing from a traumatic brain injury, a second impact frequently produces dramatic brain swelling and herniation. This is called Second Impact Syndrome and carries a 50% mortality rate. Protection and a slow return to activity is vital to a student's recovery!
One concussion also leaves the brain permanently more susceptible to further TBIs.
1 concussion = 4-6x greater likelihood of another TBI
2 concussions = 8x greater likelihood
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a progressive neurodegeneration in the absence of additional impacts. It may occur after a single concussion if severe enough, or after multiple head injuries. Diagnosis is based on a person's health history and signs/symptoms. This condition has been associated with conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
