In grades 5 and 6, students have the opportunity to take after school lessons on a band instrument.
Learning a band instrument can be a lot of fun and a way to deepen your musical education. That said, it requires daily practice and the perseverance to play even on the days that aren't as much fun to develop the muscles and skills required. You can support your young musician by having a safe place for them to practice each day for about 30 minutes without interruption, necessary materials, and plenty of encouragement. Everyone sounds squeaky when they're just beginning an instrument.
In general, a young musician needs a music stand ("wire" is fine), an instrument in working order, weekly lessons, a book of music, and a place to practice. Each instrument will have other, slightly different needs, and I'll do my best to get you started. Most rentals will come with the basics.
Remember, if anything gets stuck, bring it in to see me. If you try to force it you could damage the instrument.
The book I'm currently using with beginners is Essential Elements Book 1 for the child's instrument. Other music recommendations are given as appropriate.
Flute players will need a cleaning rod and a cloth (cotton is best). A bandana cut in half works fine; you don't want the material to be too thick or it could get stuck inside your instrument. You won't need cork grease for a flute. If it becomes difficult to assemble your instrument we will clean the tenons in your lesson.
Clarinet players will need a clarinet swab, cork grease, and reeds. New clarinet players will go through a lot of reeds at first, so I recommend purchasing a box of 10 to save money and time.
Alto saxophone players will need an alto saxophone swab, cork grease, and reeds. New alto saxophone players will go through a lot of reeds at first, so I recommend purchasing a box of 10 to save money and time.
Trumpet players will need valve oil, and if you're concerned about noise, consider a practice mute
Trombone players will need slide oil, and if you're concerned about noise, consider a practice mute
Other instruments like oboe, horn in F, bassoon, and others are considered on a case by case basis, and I'll be in contact with you about what you'll need for those instruments.
