HMS Courses

Mandatory course for all 6th grade students. The class meets every other day for 43 minutes for the school year. We will have a spring concert on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 which is mandatory. We will explore many learning opportunities this year, including: choral singing, musicals, elements of music, reading/writing music, “The Star-Spangled Banner”, school fight song, and more. Opportunities for the year include the choice of auditioning for an honor choir taking place in January, as well as performing at contest in April.

7 Grade Choir/Music

Course Description:

Mixed Choir: Grade 7. Prerequisite: None

Mandatory course for all 7th grade students. The class meets every other day for 43 minutes for the school year. We will have a fall concert on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 which is mandatory. We will explore choral singing, elements of music, sight reading, improvisation, “The Star-Spangled Banner”, school fight song, and more. Opportunities for the year include auditioning for an honor choir taking place in January, as well as performing at contest in April.

8 Grade Choir/Guitar

Course Description:

Mixed Choir: Grade 8. Prerequisite: None

Optional course for all 8th grade students. The class meets every day for 43 minutes for the semester. There is no formal concert, but there will be informal performance opportunities. We will continue working on our choral singing skills, while also diving into guitar, bucket drumming, technology, and more. Opportunities for the year include auditioning for honor choirs taking place in January and March, as well as performing at the contest in March.

*8th Graders are required to fill out and sign the guitar agreement and the syllabus/handbook agreement*

8 (& 7) Grade Show Choir - Resonance

Course Description:

Mixed Choir: Grade 8 with Grade 7 select auditioners. Prerequisite: Auditioned group

Optional auditioned ensemble for 8th grade students. The class meets every day for the school year. 7th Grade auditioned students will join us during ELO beginning in late October and will compete with us in January and February. The learning opportunities for this course include building on breath support and range in singing in rehearsing choral music, and building on the ability of using our belt voices and diction while utilizing choreography. We will perform at the Veteran’s Day program on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, caroling opportunities in November and December, as well as four show choir competitions in the spring semester. We have a $60 fee for the group to help offset the cost of competitions and outfits.

These students will also have an opportunity to audition for an honor choir taking place in January in Hastings.

7 & 8 Grade Choir - Vibrato

Course Description:

Mixed Choir: Grade 7 & 8. Prerequisite: None

Optional vocal music group that meets on Wednesdays from 2:40p-3:20p. We will focus on continuing building choral singing skills and ear training practice, as well as better performance practices. These students will also have an opportunity to audition for an honor choir taking place in January in Hastings.

We will perform in November at the patriotic concert, caroling in November and December, as well as at the contest in April, with a final concert in May 2026.

6 Grade Choir - Vox Nova

Course Description:

Mixed Choir: Grade 6. Prerequisite: None

Optional vocal music group that meets on Mondays from 3:40p-4:20p. With our new name this year, we will build on a NEW VOICE. We will focus on building choral singing skills and ear training practice. We will perform in November at the patriotic concert, caroling in November and December, as well as at the contest in April, with a final concert in May 2026.
